September 1, 201016 yr Author One other thing concerning pitching. What the Reds are becoming is a team that if they have the lead after 6 you are in deep trouble. The thoughts of coming back against Chapman, Massett, and Cordero are frightening. FWIW, Massett has been unhittable for about 2 months. Massett and Chapman could be a force.

September 1, 201016 yr Can we all agree that the Reds record is inflated due to the division they're in? It's not their fault. They've done what they've been asked to do. So, the 26-12 stat you cite is misleading when it comes to supporting Herd's contention that the Reds do not have an ace. No one is saying they're bad pitches. The Reds wouldn't be in first with bad pitchers. You know and I know that post-season play in all sports is completely different than the regular season. So can the 1 and 2 beat the top teams going against the other team's top pitchers? Hollow surface points? I would disagree but that's me. Arroyo and Cueto may not have 'ace' numbers or stuff, but they'll do more than enough to keep the Reds in the game come playoff time and hand the game over to a bullpen made up of Chapman, Rhodes, Masset, and Cordero.

September 1, 201016 yr Clyde, my question to him would be if the Phillies miss the playoffs who has better pitching with more playoff experience that the Reds need to worry about? Atlanta and SD are pretty much in the same position. Is SD a frad b/c the Phillies went there last week and swept them right after Houston went to Philly and swept them for 4 games? There is no arguing that Philly and St. Louis would be nightmare pitching matchups for a short series.

Cueto is fine. He gave up 4 HR to the Dodgers & only 5 hits. I think all 4 of those HR were solo shots. He was coming off of a suspension there. Before that was the brawl with STL. He didn't have a great line there, but I think we could all agree that emotions were flying high & exigent circumstances existed during that one. On July 30 against ATL he didn't have a great game, but went 5 1/3 & gave up 4 runs (10 hits though). Not a great outing, but it happens. Before that, you'd have to go back to early June to find a start where he wasn't "lights out". Cueto's record against other potential NL Playoff teams: ATL: 1 start, 5 1/3 innings, 10 hits, 4 runs, 3 K, 1 BB (we lost 6-4). Philly: 1-0 (2 starts), 15 innings, 10 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), 4 BB, 3 K, 1.20 ERA, 0.93 WHIP San Fran: 0-0, 1 start, 6 innings, 10 hits, 4 runs (all earned), 1 BB, 5 K, 6.00 ERA, 1.83 WHIP San Diego: 0-1, 1 start, 6 innings, 7 hits, 5 runs, 2 HR, 1 BB, 5 K, 7.50 ERA & 1.33 WHIP

I'm torn on the Reds starters. I love their depth; however, it's clear that they lack an elite starter, which is important when the playoffs roll around. With that said, I think Arroyo & Cueto are a very capable 1-2 punch. Arroyo has thrown 286 innings in September throughout his career. In those innings, his ERA is 3.34 (lowest of any month) and his WHIP is 1.18 (2nd lowest only to July which was 1.17). Arroyo is 20-9 in September in 42 starts. In October, he has started 2 games (1-0). That win was a complete game. He's thrown 13 innings, giving up only 8 hits & 1 run. He has a 0.69 ERA for his CAREER in October. Last year, Bronson was 1-2 in August, but posted a 1.99 ERA in 45 1/3 innings. In September, he went 4-1 with a 1.83 ERA. Both month's had WHIP's under 1.00 (.99 & .90 respectively.) If you combine Bronson's August this season (3-2, 2.97 ERA) with his last August, he has a 2.41 ERA. The guy does not have flashy stuff, but he has "it" & he's shown that he's capable of getting people out, particularly late in the season.

Travis Wood / Bronson Arroyo I would love to add Volquez to that list, but I don't know that you can rely on him. He was dominant in Louisville, so I expect him to be even better in Dayton. The problem is that those numbers didn't translate to success on the MLB level, so I don't feel comfortable inserting him back into the rotation, unless he can get a few starts in Cincy before the postseason. Chapman, Rhodes, Masset & Cordero would get 90% of the innings from the pen. Bray would be an early lefty specialist.

September 1, 201016 yr Given up on Ondrusek? Not quite, but how deep must one go into the bullpen? At this point, Masset, Cordero, Rhodes & Chapman are my top 4. Interestingly enough, Ondrusek has been lights out against lefties. .217 Batting average against and .87 WHIP in 16 1/3 innings.
