Pikeville-Somerset predictions

Featured Replies

The key matchup is the Pikeville defense vs. the Somerset offense...if Pikeville wins that matchup they have a great chance to win if not it could be over early...Pikeville needs a low scoring game. The defense hasn't allowed a point in the past 7 quarters against Paintsville or Harlan...Somerset is better than both those teams though IMO so the Pikeville defense better be ready to play.

Or we could talk about 2000 when Pikeville was favored and lost. This year is all that matters and looking at scores Pikeville doesn't have the defense it has had in the past and that will be a big problem this week. It was obvious that Hazard was not nearly as good as Lynn Camp and they dusted Pikeville--these are high school kids we're talking about so scores can vary week to week but according to what Evarts scored on Paintsville and what Lynn Camp did to Hazard it looks like the defenses are a little weaker than normal in district 8. Somerset has put point on the board on everyone including Danville--Pikeville can win if they can hold the ball and keep the score in the 20's but beyond that they don't have the firepower.

That all makes sense, but everyone knows that you CANNOT pick a game based on who-beats-who-by-how-much.....Paintsville beat Hazard, Hazard beat Pikeville, Pikeville beat Paintsville. Different weeks, different conditions. So throw that out the window! Sure the Jumpers have a great new QB and that could make all the difference in the world, who knows!? We'll soon find out. Let's have a great, injury-free game! Good luck Panthers! Work hard this week! :ylsuper:

Ummm I think that's pretty much what I just said. Anyway, what I was getting at is the past is the past--the teams from the last 2 years aren't playing this week. This is a different year. Pikeville is aboulutely capable of beating Somerset but they have little margin for error. Like I said Pikeville's defensive performance against Hazard's passing offense puts up all kind of red flags for me. I think they'll have a hard time keeping Somerset below 35 points--while I'm not ready to compare Somerset's defense with the '85 Chicago Bears I think that will be enough to win. DragonPappy--you've seen both teams, what do you think?

Do ya wanna talk about LAST year, then? :jump:

This isn't last year either by far!

Pikeville by a few. Upsets happen.

This isn't last year either by far!

YEA!!! We agree!!!

Somerset has a new QB and Pikeville has a new coach. It will be a great game, no doubt. You can bet the briarpatch on it!!!

What is Somersets main thing on offense.Do they like to run or pass more or are they likely to mix it up a lot. Ne 1 know.

I have a question. I went to the game last night between Pikeville-Harlan. Quarterback #7 appeared to me to be twice as good as QB#8. 7 was the QB that also sparked the comeback vs/ Paintsville, am I right? I have never seen a player with more explosive speed. I mean in all 3 levels of football, when I seen him break that run for 65 yards, it was like a blur. I think his passes look more pure and I think the team feeds off of this kid. So what is the controversy?

From Pikeville's stats on the KHSAA website...

In the regular season #7 Chase Huffman was 40-111 (36.03%) for 460 yards with 3 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.

I've seen Pikeville play a few times this season and it seems that Huffman has good speed and can throw a pretty pass -- but those passes don't usually find receivers.

I have seen both teams in person, and I think Pikeville can play with Somerset, but that will depend on how well Pikeville will run the football. I think it is important for Pikeville offense to have long drives and keep Somerset's offense off the field. In a way I thought that was one thing that really hurt Lynn Camp against Somerset, was LC scoring on big plays, mainly at the end, because it gave the Jumpers enough time to comeback for the win. But of course you will take a score whatever way you get it, but that will be a big key imo long drives for Pikeville. Pikeville is at their best in November, they know how to win this time of year. Somerset has matured over the last two years, and I think that is the difference in this team, from the last two years. Pikeville will have to be on top of their game to win. With the game at the Briar Patch I like the Jumpers.

Somerset 38

Pikeville 28

Somerset 27

P'ville 20

Jumpers are a little better at home.

Home field advantage will put Somerset over the top IMO.

Somerset 21

Pikeville 14

of course you do if you are a panther. However, Somerset will roll.

People said Harlan would roll tooo...

Pikeville is also playing too QBs now.. It adds a whole new list of options to the offense.
