Well H, which is more impressive, playing in and winning an actual posteason game (the North-South Championship) or being declared champion by a calculator (LIT)? Most BGP'ers have said in the past that it's what happens on the field that matters, and not what happens on paper!

 

The 1943 Courier-Journal newspaper clipping I have states that going into the Male/Manual game, the two teams were 1-2 in Kentucky in the Litkenhous ratings, which at that time were also run and published for high school football in several neighboring states (like the Massey ratings are today). So, in effect, that game was a post season game (it was just as much post season as the North-South bowl, as both games were played on Thanksgiving Day) and that year was a matchup of #1 vs #2. Male won convincingly, 26-7 before a packed house at Manual Stadium.

 

I don't see what the problem is with accepting the fact that there can be more than one mythical champ! It's happened in college football on numerous occasions. Heck, it's still happening in KY prep football, even with title games being played! According to MaxPreps last year, Lou. St. X was the best team in KY, whereas according to USA Today it was Highlands... I suppose both can claim a mythical overall state football title!

I have a pretty good source where Madisonville High School claims the "title" in 1956. Supporting details: even though ST X was ranked no. 1 in the LIT rankings, they had a tie that season. Flaget had a loss but were ranked no. 2. Madisonville was 10-0. They were ranked no. 3, but felt overlooked by the ranking system and since they were the only team undefeated and untied they do claim the title.

Stands to reason it was probably traditional Western Ky powers such as Henderson, Owensboro, Hopkinsville, etc.

Declared by whom? An old, faded patch of dubious origin? Yeah, that keeps me awake at night :lol:. I'll settle for the most widely-cited rating system in the pre-playoff era, the Litkenhous Ratings. You'll notice that someone else brought the Lit champions into this thread--that's how ubiquitous they are regarding pre-1959 football in this state. I'll bet no one can even produce the list of North-South Bowl winners over the years.

Now I understand why they were call mythical champions. Wonder what it was like 67 years ago.

It's all a hit-and-myth proposition, anyway...:lol:

How can you not get wrapped up in it, when there is a letter sweater in a closet somewhere which has a beautiful patch on it that says "1956 State Champion"?

Franklin-Simpson(21-0), Owensboro Cath.(32-12), Daviess Co., Murray, Caldwell Co., Henderson Co.(45-0), Sturgis(21-20), Hopkinsville(45-0), Mayfield(7-2), Henderson City(75-0). There were 6 division one players on that team. One went to Geogia Tech and the other 5 went to Kentucky. 5 of the 6 made all state first team.
