Fair point- that is why I also mentioned the Yanks. Maybe Boston claimed him to keep him out of the race- my point is that I think he was claimed by an AL East team to keep him out off of the roster of a competitor. I think it may have been the Rays, but I don't know.

I could see the Red Sox grabbing him to keep him from the Rays. Carlos Pena has been out with a foot injury garnered during the Yankees series. Johnson and Rodriguez have not been tearing it up in as replacements. Although the Rays have not put Pena on the DL, they may be interested in Dunn. They show no transactions today.

Because the Nationals thought that they would still be able to move him after the deadline so their asking price was very high before the deadline. There is a good chance that they'll take less now. But I'm sure they'll be disappointed if it is anyone other than one of the AL East teams because they'll either have to keep him or settle for less.

 

However, they probably won't just give him away--which is why a lesser team that is trying to get to the playoffs would claim him. They can offer the Nationals very little for Dunn to force them to pull him back. This would keep him from ending up with one of the big market teams.

I did not say that an NL team would not do that- quite frankly if Colorado claimed him they did that with the sole purpose of keeping him away from the Giants. I simply offered what I think happened. I could be wrong- I have no idea.

 

I think the Rays do not want Dunn on the open market because they feel he could end up with a competitor in the AL East if he cleared and the Nats could deal with anyone. Any team could have had the same strategy, but I felt the Rays would put in the claim and other might pass. Again, JMO.

I agree 100% with the second paragraph- I just put a team to it that I thought would utilize the strategy. I don't think an NL would try to block an AL team acquiring Dunn, as was insiuated by an earlier post.

I'm sorry, I just don't see your logic. So teams like the Braves, Mets, Phillies, Reds, Cardinals, Padres, Giants, and Rockies, who are all fighting for a playoff berth, aren't going to think that they could stop him from going to the competition, but the Rays, the team with the 2nd to last claim, are the only ones thinking that? Makes zero sense.

 

Even if he were to make it out of the NL, which is probably close to a 0% chance, there's even less chance he makes it far enough in the AL to allow the Rays to make a claim.

Obviously, UKMF and TBW, you guys think he was claimed by an NL team. I think he was claimed by an AL East team. We can agree to disagree. The only point that was made that I disagree with is an NL team trying to block Dunn from going to the AL- I just don't think any GM would do that. Rockies block Giants, okay. Mets want to block Braves, sure I can see it.

 

I think we all agree that he was claimed to ensure that he actually won't be traded from the Nats to help a competitor in the post season- this is really my only point. When the dust settles, I think Dunn will end the season as a Nat even though he was claimed.

Yeah, that's what the trade rumor site said. It would be someone in the National League, so unless it was merely done to keep a rival from getting him, what contender has an opening at 1B?

NBCsports.com is reporting that it is believed the Dodgers claimed him. Theory correct- they obviously wanted to keep him away from the Giants- team was wrong. He probably didn't make it out of the NL. Oh well!
