August 1, 201016 yr Author Actually, you didn't, see post #3. Alright, I'll go first them. I'm sorry, but I can't convince myself that a 2 year old can be a criminal or that he/she willfully broke the law upon entering the country. However, they are not a citizen yet, either. As such, they would have to meet requirements of education, military service and non-criminal activity in order to gain the status of "citizen." Other immigrants seeking a path to citizenship would not be required to serve in the military or attain a college education to do so. Sometimes, different situations require different solutions.
August 1, 201016 yr You all do understand that this bill has bipartisan support, right? Also, I again ask of you...what is the RIGHT thing to do for kids that were brought to this country illegally? Expect them to walk back across the border on their 18th birthday? This bill allows them to become productive individuals that can help our country by serving in the military or attending college. Yup, and my congressman, both sitting senators, and the candidates running this fall know how I feel. I don't care if they are 2 or 17. They are still criminals and the responsibility for them being criminals is on their parents, who committed a crime by coming here illegally, not me.

I think you're right on target. If you came here as a minor, you really are not guilty of any crime whatsoever. What is wrong witrh encouraging these kids (who will be here anyway, whether you like it or not) to better themselves, and become law-abiding, tax-paying, responsible citizens? I just don't get anyone being against the idea. Saying that it will only help a certain percentage of the illegal population, isn't a very good argument. Isn't doing something to help a percentage of people, better than doing nothing, except standing around shouting, "Go home!"? Would you rather all of these kids join gangs, commit crimes, and collect welfare out of your tax dollars?

A child's record is wiped clean when they become an adult. A child is definitely not a criminal.

I'd rather they have to serve in the military when they're old enough to earn their citizen status. Again, no one is addressing the unfairness to those that come here legally.

I think it dramatically increases the bureaucratic burden on our already overwhelmed immigration service and is a kick in the face to all that have applied and obtained citizenship and resident, educational, and work visas legally. The biggest reason to my opposition? The act adds incentive to increase the number of illegals bringing their minor children into this country.

Does this also apply to children that are with their parents during the commission of other crimes?
August 1, 201016 yr Author ^ I always wondered what "sins of the fathers" pertained to. I'm curious as to what other sins or crimes that my parents commit that I am responsible for.
August 1, 201016 yr I'm curious as to what other sins or crimes that my parents commit that I am responsible for. Not to threadjack, but I'm finishing up a Ruth Rendall "Inspector Wexford" mystery as we speak. The title - "Sins of the Fathers".

August 1, 201016 yr Just curious. Does this also apply to children that are with their parents during the commission of other crimes?Depending upon the age of the minors and participation level in the crime, they are processed through family court. Applies to US citizens, though. Under current immigration laws all illegal immigrants are illegal, regardless of age. As far as I am concerned, your comparison doesn't apply here.
