Thanks, but I'm not buying that at all. Even Marty said that Leake would not go back out to the mound. It just doesn't make any sense to send Leake to bat unless he's the best hitter for that situation. And, despite Leake's success at the plate, you'll have a hard time convincing me he's a better option than Rolen, Stubbs, Nix, or even Cairo.

I was listening and surprisingly Marty agreed with Dusty's decision to take Rolen down and let Leake bat. He said it made sense to save Rolen to PH in a later inning. Leake is a great hitting pitcher but it does look bizarre to let him hit in that situation.

It's the byproduct of having a pitcher like Owings who can go yard and is used as a pinch hitter.

Having Owens is even more of a reason to use your bench early in games. You don't need to save position players b/c if Owings has to pitch for a few innings he doesn't need a pinch hitter.

I hope all the people who hammer people that don't like Dusty chime in on this. This was a move that could have cost them a game. Dusty shoulf get some credit this year obviously. My bigest problem w/ him though is his only real job after the lineup is turned in is knowhing when and how to pull a pitcher. He botched that last night. He botches it often enough that I think he costs them a few games a year. When your team looks good enough for a playoff race you can't have a manager costing you games by leaving pitchers in to hit and leaving a guy w/ 17 HR's and 53 RBI's on the bench. They could have still lost obviously, but that is terrible.

Do I think it was the right decision? No, but to think that, that particular move cost them the game is downright laughable.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but some factors to consider: 1) Cairo was already in the game, so unless they added a new rule, he wasn't available. 2) Rolen would be better off left for the 8th or 9th. 3) I have more confidence in Leake making contact there than I do Stubbs. Leake makes contact 72% of his ABs. Stubbs only 68%.
