June 30, 201016 yr I'm not disagreeing with you, but some factors to consider: 1) Cairo was already in the game, so unless they added a new rule, he wasn't available. 2) Rolen would be better off left for the 8th or 9th. 3) I have more confidence in Leake making contact there than I do Stubbs. Leake makes contact 72% of his ABs. Stubbs only 68%. Okay, so Nix instead of Cairo. My mistake there. I would have pinch hit Rolen there. Regardless, the point remains that Dusty did not give his team the best opportunity to succeed right there. It should also be considered that Hernandez was on 2nd base and he is horribly slow. Even with 2 outs, it would take a double for him to score. As a pinch hitter, Stubbs is 1/2 for the year with 2 BB.

So, he doesn't use Nix against a righty starter (Joe Blanton). That doesn't make sense. To make things worse, he used Nix against Romero (for whom he claimed he was saving Scott Rolen). Romero is a lefty and a tough one at that. So he saved Nix (a lefty) for a tough lefty, while not using Scott Rolen (who has been one of the hottest hitters) AT ALL. On top of that, Dusty claims that he didn't want to use Rolen because they would have just pitched around him. What is wrong with having 2 guys on base and Brandon Phillips at the plate? It doesn't make any sense at all unless Scott Rolen was just unavailable to play. Give me a break Dusty...

Dusty's job is to put the Reds in the best position to win. I would have used Scott Rolen, made a double switch, and inserted him at 3rd for the final 3+ innings. That way, even if he was walked, "our best pinch hitter" would have gotten another at bat. Also, we would have upgraded defensively. If the Phils would have walked Rolen, then the Reds have 1st & 2nd with 2 outs & Brandon Phillips at the dish. That's a great situation. I'm not claiming that the move cost the Reds the game. But Dusty's job is to put his team in the best possible situation for success. He simply did not do that. He tried to offer an explanation for why he did what he did. I respect that, but his explanation only makes matters worse because it's completely illogical. I am enjoying the Reds season. Very much so. I can handle a loss, especially to a good team like the Phillies. But the Reds had a chance to capitalize and get a few more runs in the 6th inning & Dusty let it slip away.

Scott Rolen has pinch hit 3 times this season. He's 2/3 with 2 HR & 4 RBI. He's also .293 with RISP with 6 HR & 39 RBI. With 2 outs & RISP, Rolen is hitting .250 with 3 HR & 12 RBI. If Rolen walks, Brandon Phillips comes to the plate. It's possible that the Phillies would also pull Blanton. Phillips does not excel with RISP, but he's still very capable of driving in Hernandez or knocking one out of the park.

Rolen is old and has a bad back, he almost assuredly wasn't going to be put into the game in any situation other than strictly a pinch hitter. He needs about a day a week off.
