If I was Dixie I would throw my best pitchers two innings each to keep them sharp (as long as they are scoring along the way which I think they would do in this game.) With the artificial turf I don't see any rain-outs, just delays which makes for a long day of sitting around.

They ran behind last year with 2 1/2 hours between games. I feel bad for the last two teams who get there at 4:00 for a 5pm game and will probably not start until 6:30 or after.

 

Also, they've moved the championship game to 11 am on Sat. Nothing says regional finals like bp at your school at 8:30 am!!

 

I think some of the coaches have had enough. It's great for the fans and parents out there but more and more coaches have had it.

While Mr. Brown has been kind enough to allow the Ninth Region to be played at Champion Window Field I think a lot of people forget it is indeed a field built with Public Funds (Tax Dollars) by the City of Florence, Ky. So........

No. Tuesday was originally left open on the Freedom schedule because the 9th region was first slated for a Monday, Tuesday and Friday tournament. Then someone in the 9th made it a Monday, Friday and Saturday tournament. So the Freedom scheduled amateur games on the field for Tuesday. Any rainouts will be played at the district winner's field Tuesday-Thursday.

 

And the whole moving the tournament dates from M, T and F to M, F and S explains why the championship game is so early on Saturday. The Freedom already have events booked later in the day. So it's not the Freedom's fault. It is on whoever in the 9th region moved the days around.

 

I always find the pitching decisions by the coaches to be very interesting in these tournaments. Always the question of whether you start your ace to (help) ensure you have the chance to play the next round or whether you throw #2 so that you have #1 available for the next bigger game. We've seen situations on both sides in the past where a team was eliminated with their ace sitting on the bench and also times when a team advanced to the next round, but had no realistic chance given they had used their top pitcher to get to that game. Certainly leaves a lot of room for Monday Morning QB'ing by us BGP'ers. :lol: Exceptions to every rule and certainly other factors come into play, such as opponent and how big a drop it is from your #1 to your #2, but I've generally always been a believer that you throw your best to advance, as it's tough to win the next game when you're not playing in it. That being said, of course, there are certainly exceptions - I don't see Dixie throwing Smallwood against Newport when their next round opponent will be a tough Holy Cross or Conner.

I think it is all part of the title 9 deal. The girls softball regional is scheduled to start on Tuesday with two games, and then Wednesday -two more. Kind of like how they do basketball. Don't want to keep people away from the action. Girls have to be "spotlighted", just like the boys.

You must be right then. I am not a fan of the first round games being played at Champions Field. For the semi's and finals fine, but with weather like we are having now, it could be a long day. I hope not.

I would like to take this moment to give a big tip of the cap to the CovCath Colonel baseball team. Not for winning 20 games, or for making the regional tournament, but for the way they have taken in TheOldGuy and made him a part of this team. TheOldGuy is one of our Mr. Colonels on the broadcast. He's a class of '68 grad and played baseball for and was a fine catcher. He loves CovCath more than most. He's been helping out the coaches keeping score and stats and being the Colonels #1 fan. He's also been keeping us all well informed of what happens at the games with his recaps. Well, I found out that the team asked him to shag some balls during BP and he actually got to catch during infield at Champion field on Sunday. It's so common for high school kids to not give fans like TheOldGuy the time of day. But they have recognized that he's actually part of the program and they have empraced his enthusiasm, love for CovCath, love for baseball and his Spirt That Will Not Die. We need more fans like TheOldGuy and we certainly need more young men like this year's CovCath team that "gets it".
