If I'm not mistaken, this is the third or fourth time Cov Cath has participated in the Crosstown Showdown. Cov Cath had been scheduling Moeller on a yearly basis since '92 or '93 when they were asked to compete against them in the Showdown at Nippert during the '98 season. In addition to Moeller, I believe they played St. X and Elder in years past...for what it's worth.

I would have to agree. I know scheduling can be a nightmare but I too would have liked to see Ky vs OH matchups in this instead of taking games already on the teams schedule and just moving the venue. With LaSalle and Cov Cath already scheduled, even if they could have taken that game and played it as part of this event I think it would draw more interest. I would love to see 3-4 N Ky teams play 3-4 comparable teams from OH as part of the Shootout.

I think it may have more to do with Dale than Gamble and Skinner.

 

Highlands holds itself to a high barometer, as they should, and don't like to share the limelight with others. If they were the featured game, then they might participate.

 

I think Dale is very calculating (and I use this word in the positive) as to where to place the Bluebirds. It appears his latest is to attempt to have the Birds be national champions. This would be impossible if they would suffer an early season setback to Moeller or Elder or Cinti St. X. (Yes I know they beat the Bombers last year, but that was the exception.)

I would have liked to see all of the KY teams playing schools from across the river. Some interesting matchups could have been NewCath against a GCL North opponent, and Ryle CCH and Dixie against either a GCL south big boy or someone in the GMC. It's a great venue and the boys will have a blast playing at Nippert, it's just that I thought the whole point of the Crossdown Showdown was to match up teams that wouldn't normally play each other.

I would also love to see Highlands represent NKY football in the showdown. After all, the birds are still the class of the bluegrass.

Its a fair question to ask how the top program in KY never gets invited.

 

I agree with Ville that KY teams should play Ohio teams in this one.

I agree, it doesn't make sense to play another KY team that you've played every year forever. What's the fun in that. I don't see many neutral fans coming over to watch.

Lets see , this is a Ky high school football forum , and Highlands is in Ky , so whats the problem ?

Could part of the reason KY schools dont play Ohio schools in this be due to the Ohio schools? Didn't an Ohio school about 5 or so years ago miss their playoffs because they were 9-1 and the one loss was to an KY school in this? I think the chance for a loss hurts the Ohio schools more than the KY schools.

I don't think the fact that a team is from KY has any impact on a team's playoff chances. OH schools like to invite good KY teams that they think they can beat so that they can then send them back to KY where they will accumulate wins that will help the OH team in the Harbins.

When my school played Elder a few years back, I remember our HC telling us that the Ohio Schools look at playing Kentucky schools as if we are some huge prize. He told us that they would get big points for beating us because we were in all likelyhood going to get atleast 6 wins that season. So I have since been under the impression that Ohio schools love to play decent Kentucky schools because it looks like a big win against a quality opponent in their system.
