She is not trying to pass the blame... It WAS the Feds duty to enforce immigration law...

She passed a new law to deal with it, then Obama condemns her and the Arizona State government for it. Fact is, as cammando pointed out, that's supposed to be handled by the Feds. Instead of trying to work with Arizona on the issue, Obama uses it as a cheap political tool.

I'm sorry, there's just no way you can convince me that this particular aspect of the law is a good idea. I definitely support the provisions having to do with levying fines against those who hire illegal immigrants. And I'm not opposed to checking someone's residency status when they're under arrest for something else. It's the concept of "reasonable suspicion" that I don't care for. Legally, I simply feel it's sort of an untenable standard that will make life difficult for peace officers, judges and those feeling the force of the law (American citizens and those permitted to work here are what I mean).

 

So, a traffic stop would not be sufficient for you? Since the bolded would not be them technically under arrest.

I think you have hit upon a key part of the equation.

 

Whose problem is this truly? Is it the federal government's border and they are assigned to protect it? Is it the state's border and they are assigned to protect it?

 

There are always a lot of "state rights being violated by federal government policies" comments on here and I think VoR has hit upon the crux of the issue.

The Arizona governor feels it is the federal governments who have abandoned the issue for more politically less sensitive issues and as a result their abandonment of the issue has created a whole host of problems for her state. So, she and her fellow legislators with the OVERWHELMING SUPPORT of the voters of Arizona stepped up to address the problem where they felt the federal government was not.

 

Reminds me of the frontline soldiers in a battle having to pay the price for bad decisions of the generals way in the back.

I think the complaint comes from the fact that the party who should be doing something about the problem is making fun of the solutions being put into place to stop the problem at the state level.

You ask a reasonable question BUT whom is better equipped with resources both financially and physically to handle the problem? Not the state.

 

And I would hazard a guess that they felt abandoned by the federal government BEFORE a change we can believe in by the GW policy that did not help their issues/problems.

:thumb: It puts police in a catch-22 of enforcing the law and risking civil rights complaints or not enforcing the law and risking other lawsuits, and many departments have said as much.

I've asked this in multiple threads now, but here goes again. If this is true, why was the governor so insistent that the new law was needed?

 

Because DC will not do its job. We must realize there is the issue of what to do about those here illegally at this moment and the issue to close the border to any future illegals coming in. Why doesn't DC do something about closing the borders? It seems as if a majority agree on that issue and deal with the illegals already here as a seperate item. No sense doing anything until the borders are closed.

What most liberals forget about is the Constitution. The Constitution authorizes the government to defend the country, therefore this is an action that the federal government should attend to. What conservatives want is adherence to the Constitution.

More involvement? How about the Feds just do their job?

And what most conservatives forget is that a republican was in office for eight years (with a friendly congress for part of that time) and tried to begin immigration reform, yet anything besides putting all 9 million on a bus immediately and "send them home" was labeled as "amnesty."

 

We need real solutions and I'm all for them being bi-partisan.

Please note that I used liberals and conservatives, not political labels. I oppossed a lot of Bush's domestic agenda. Even when a bill was passed that allowed for the building of a wall on parts of the border DC drug its feet and part of it was a virtual wall, WOW. Then Obama comes along and nothing has been done to even achieve this modest goal. I do not want any bill that even hints of amnesty or a chance of citizenship. They go back when caught or on their own.

What about pulling someone over for a traffic violation would suggest that they are an illegal immigrant? Maybe if the officer sees something or notices something during the course of the stop that would suggest such is the case then he could proceed to checking citizenship or work status identification. But it still seems to me like what we have done is told an entire segment of American citizens that they have to carry certain documentation that perhaps the rest of us don't.
