April 27, 201016 yr I saw somewhere yesterday Micah Johnson was going to a mini-camp with the Giants. RB Alfonso Smith signed with the Arizona.
April 28, 201016 yr I tutored John Conner in math last year, and he was just about the hardest working athlete I had. He wasn't the best at the subject, but he was very very willing to learn, and had a great attitude. Honestly it kind of blew me away how polite and respectful he was. He is a great guy and I wish him nothing but the best in the NFL. Nice to hear! I wish him the best.
April 28, 201016 yr I sure will miss John Conner. He was fun to watch, and I will miss the Terminator references. Those were comedy gold.
April 28, 201016 yr Sadly, Micah just never figured it out. I stand by the comments I made 4 years ago that he should have put on some weight and put his hand on the ground. LB was not a good fit for him. A bunch of us said the same thing. I hope he did his work in the class room, the NFL will never be in his future from here on out. It's hard to see what intangibles he may have had in professional football.

April 29, 201016 yr Micah was a really good LBer for UK, just because he might not have the speed or quickness for the NFL doesnt mean that he wasnt a bigtime contributor for the Cats defense.
May 3, 201016 yr Isn't it ironic that perhaps the most heraled football recurit at UK went undrafted while fellow teammate and former walk-on John Conner went in the 5th round. Sadly, Micah just never figured it out. I stand by the comments I made 4 years ago that he should have put on some weight and put his hand on the ground. LB was not a good fit for him. John Conner is a great story. :thumb: I stand by your comments as well. I said the same thing. The fact is, the recruiting sources that had him rated so high were projecting him as a D-lineman, not a LB. I don't think they'd have rated him as high as a LB, but I could be wrong. I think he had the potential to be a very, very good lineman had he been willing to make the move. And, that certainly would have given him the best opportunity to play at the next level. Simply put, he never had the speed to play the LB position at an elite level, IMO. Don't get me wrong, he was a solid player for UK during his career, but never the difference maker we expected, or needed, coming out of high school. I wonder if UK's willingness to allow him to play LB is the reason they were able to land him in the first place. Ultimately, having him at MLB was better than not having him at all from a UK perspective, but from Micah's perspective, I think he may missed an opportunity to be a big time player in the trenches.:idunno:

But when Micah ran a 4.99 everybody said he is too slow to play LB in the NFL. I'm not saying Micah is/was the player that Spikes is but he was still picked extremely early after running 5.0. I wish Micah all the luck though, I just didn't see why it wasn't a big topic and cause Spikes to drop in the draft over it. The slow 40 time that is. Just saying.

I agree that it is a bit of a double standard, but Spikes did fall in the draft. He was a possible 1st rounder last year, and coming into the season I think Mel and McShay had him top 15-20. Also from watching both players, I think Spikes is better at all other parts of the game than Micah is. He can get off blocks, he's nasty in a blitz, and he has great instincts. I love Micah, but in comparing the two it's easy to see why Spikes was more coveted. Sure he ran a 5.0 in the 40, but whenever you watched him at UF he was in on every tackle. JMO.:thumb:

The fact that Spikes was a better player in college and played for a higher profile school no doubt helped him. Other than that, I can't offer much with regard to Brandon Spikes. Personally, I was never that impressed with Micah Johnson as a MLB. He was solid, but that's about it, IMO. I never saw him as a difference maker, nor am I surprised that he went undrafted. I think he could have been as a lineman. I wish him well though. It's still possible he could land somewhere as a free agent and develop into a role.

We often hear and read the bad things about college athletes. Your post was a refreshing change.
