The War- By: Ken Burns is high on my list...

It was an excellent first episode. I had never heard the part about the small pox inoculations either. It was also startling to hear that four times as many patriots died on the prison ships as died in battle.

I did know of the prison ships, but I don't think I had ever heard the numbers in that way. It was staggering. I'm going to New York this summer and I think I might visit that monument just to find out more about the ships. Very interesting and very sad.

I thought it was excellent.

 

Thought it was crazy that the British Navy's assault on NYC was it's largest until the D-Day invasion of Normandy.

Found the tidbit about when the Pilgrims arrived that the future US was in a mini-ice age. Wow, the Pilgrims must have brought global warming with them.

I haven't watched it yet, but I have it on DVR. I recently read a pair of novels about the American Revolution and now I'm fascinated by it...the story, the people, everything. It's an amazing story. I can't believe I've only recently discovered that and began to learn about it.

That's the two books. The author is Jeff Shaara. He also wrote the book Gods And Generals (if you've seen the movie) and his father wrote The Killer Angels, which is the book that the movie Gettysburg was based on. I'd highly recommend him to anyone who is interested in American military history. The books are novels, but he remains true to the historical facts, so they're informative as well as entertaining.

 

There's another book called The Glorious Cause by another author, so if you buy, make sure Jeff Shaara is the author.

That's pretty funny. I have to admit that when I watched the episode last night ( repeat I think) and they showed some of the colonists felling trees to slow down the Brits moving into NY from Canada and shooting the native American scouts, my first thoughts were that in today's world, the tree huggers would be appealing to G. Washington to stop his troops from felling the trees and the media types would be complaining that it's ethnic discrimination to shoot the scouts first. :madman:
