Mason County survives and advances, leading by as much as 12 in regulation, but falling behind late before tying it and going to the extra session. Mason County held for one shot from about the 1:20 minute mark of OT, and Gilbert hits a runner with 4 seconds left and the clock drains to 1.6 before a North Hardin timeout. The Trojans got off a halfcourt heave, but it was short.

 

Mason County is now 3-1 in OT games at the Sweet 16 tourney, and have won all three since a 64-63 loss to Doss in the 1985 quarterfinals.

Well both of their OT wins before this one were that year. They had that 3OT game against Trinity and then a single OT against Scott County.

I was worried about all the talk of an "easy" draw. While the bottom half avoided most of the top ranked teams in the state, Mason Couny has been up and down this year for a number of reasons. They really haven't had any "easy" wins this year.

 

I like their chances tomorrow, but certainly not taking anything for granted.

Royals are well known for going on big time scoring droughts, I knew it was coming after the first quarter and wasn't shocked to see this come down to the wire.

No offense in the 4th quarter from the Royals allowed North Hardin to get back into the game. Mason County "survived and advanced" by "finding a way to win"...pardon the clichés! I thought NH would be too athletic in the end...but much to my surprise, the Royals pulled this one out. On to tomorrow night @ 8.

Early on it looked like the Royals were going to take them apart, did everything right and then lost the midas touch and struggled big time to survive to play again another day.

 

Setty did not have a very good night. Many T.O.'s and strips, BUT when he entered the game at the start of the game, he produced 5 quick points and pulled down a couple of rebounds. IF he doesn't step up at that time, the Royals don't win.

 

Huge night on the boards for Bluford!

 

I heard a well-respected 10th Region coach refer to Gilbert as a one-man delay game. Pretty appropriate!

North Hardin is pretty weak from a weak region. Mason Co should win easily.

 

Disagree. Setty, Gilbert and the Langs will be too much for NH. Look for Bluford to have a big game. Mason Co should win by 15+ in this game. With the draw, Mason Co should be playing Saturday morning.

 

Is the state really this weak? This is the weakest team Mason Co. has had for years they just put it all together at the right time in the Regional.

As I said, the 5th Region is pretty weak -- it was a two-horse race all year -- but that doesn't mean NH is.

 

The question some of you might need to be asking is how tough, really, is the 10th? Like the folks in the 9th, sometimes you 10th Region folks engage in an awful lot of group-think because of your numbers on BGP.

Goldie - good call on Bluford. I think NH was pretty surprised by his contribution. I know I was.

On a more positive note: Bluford shows up again BIG for the Royals. IMO he is the most important player for Mason County. Bradley Lang was aggressive all night on both ends. And once again, as the same in the region finals, the combination of Gilbert on the offensive end and J.Lang on the defensive end proved vital at the guard position for Coach O'Hearn's squad.

Treg Setty, Jordan Gilbert and Justin Lang get most of the credit for Mason County, and deservedly so. But if Mason County is going to make a run in this tournament, Brad Lang and Rheuben Bluford are the keys. They must continue to hit the glass hard for the Royals.

Jim, I tried to get your attention at halftime tonight but to no avail. My voice doesn't carry.

 

This is one 10th Region fan who was not at all surprised by how close the game was. This ain't your older brother's Royals; a nice team with a lot of heart but no Mr. Basketball to carry the whole group. Mason County won't blow anybody out, and they'll hang with most teams.

I have a question, why is it that everytime a player in that game would go catapulting into the camerafolk, they chose the ladies?:idunno:
