Kentucky Football Coaches Propose Change to Spring Football

Featured Replies

Hardly. When do college coaches come out and get a jump start on recruiting...Spring. When can you get a lot of your offense and defense installed so you don't have to do it in the summer...Spring. When can you evaluate your returning players that don't play another sport and move forward with your plans for the season...Spring. Those two weeks of practice are critical for a lot of schools as they move into their summer programs.

I would say it's alot more important to a new staff than an established staff and system.

Im really surprised that the coach's just didn't ask that their be no limitations on practice. I say that we just stop Basketball Season, and Baseball Season, and lets only have year round football... It just seems to me like football coach's wine and cry more then any other high school coach's.

Really?

Baseball and basketball are already year around. Now, you're going to say that summer ball and fall ball, and AAU are not school affiliated, but that's your tail, I'm sitting on mine.

A football player can not go anywhere and practice actual football, except for their school.

AMEN

The biggest crime is how football lost the month of June. WHo cares about spring ball, give me June 7on7 back.

There is nothing holding schools back from having "open field" for baseball. To have 10 days of "fall practice" is not real feasible, because most of your baseball players are either playing in a fall league or playing a varsity sport for their school. So it is really mute point.
I don’t think it’s possible to ever make it a level playing field. Coming from a small high school with only 400+ students, we share athletes in every sport. If basketball goes deep into tournament play, they miss most of the early baseball practices which begins Feb. 15th. And, as everyone knows March weather in Kentucky doesn’t allow for many opportunities to be on the field. So, now let’s throw spring football practice into the mix. I can count at least 13 baseball players (7 starters) who play football.

And then someone says “well they have AAU or fall baseball”… again if you’re sharing athletes, coaches are tugging, pulling and/or pushing to get just a little bit of their time, only a small percentage of our players get to play “fall ball” for one reason or another. So…here it is a few days until the official baseball season begins and we have several players who have only been on the field a couple times. I don’t know what the answer is, but in our case the current policy can’t work like it was intended. Larger schools, which have athletes that only, participate in one sport, I’m guessing its ok, but for all of the smaller programs, it’s a little difficult.

I know there are comparisions to AAU, club sports, and open gyms, but does the KHSAA allow any other sport besides football to have out-of-season practices with their coach?

No. But, that is because there is no other way for football players to practice, we don't have AAU football, or Legion Football, or any other way for football players to get out of season practice. I think that is the point.

Very true. But I'm starting to hear a little background noise indicating if the ban in June 7s continues, you are going to see the formation of AAU-like passing leagues formed in Ky. While a Ky high school football coach can't be involved, they'll skirt that rule the way some high school basketball and baseball coaches have skirted it: get a friendly who is a non-coach, but is knowledgable about qbs and receivers (and the high school's offense) to form a team from high school football players at the school and contact similarly situated folks at other schools and wa la, the players are participating in 7s in June. With that opportunity, some of the kids won't be participating in the high school basketball open gyms and we get back to where we were, only worse, because we will now have kids being coached by non-professionals.

...we will now have kids being coached by non-professionals.

Is that similar or different than the "non-professionls" who coached them for the 13 years leading up to their freshman year? :D

To be honest, I am surprised that something along these lines hasn't been done already. Baseball and basketball are literally going year around, I am surprised that someone hasn't formed some kind of alternative football league to do the same.

I bet its more of an insurance issue than anything.

That is what I am starting to hear as well!!!:sssh:

When I was growing up a bunch of kids in the neighborhood would get a football, divide up into teams and play in somebody's back yard. I don't see how having an "open field" would be any different than the pick up games that happen in "open gym". Am I missing something?

Open gym is way different than having practice - when executed within the rules of the KHSAA.
