Kentucky Football Coaches Propose Change to Spring Football

Featured Replies

It is not as big a deal if you have a turf field. For those who do not, the fields a probably a sloppy, sloppy muddy mess and it will damage the fields for when in-season practice begins. So that means additional costs in repairing the practice fields.

There is no probably about it. In NKY we just had 15 inches of snow melt off the fields and they are sloppy and the small peak of 50 degree weather will not dry them out to make due for great practices.

There needs to be more to the proposal to make it better. Here is some things I think need to happen:

1. Let the schools choose their window, with the exception that you can not practice during your schools testing window, and you must complete it before school is out. Your school must submit your dates before Oct. 1st or not be allowed to participate in spring football.

2. I think that 8th graders should be allowed to participate in spring practice with the high school team. That would help introduce them to the ways things are done at the high school level. Also I don't understand why this is such a big deal, I mean they can lift and condition with them, why not let them practice with them. I know that 8th graders partgicipate in open gyms with basketball teams, so why not let them do the same for football. This would be especially beneficial for your small schools, who lose numbers when baseball and track starts.

3. I do not understand why the football team gets punished if their basketball team does not get the job done in the district tournament, but yet if my basketball team makes it far then I get the opportunity to have better weather, that makes no sense.

Both Ram and Braves1 make some very good points. I think Football would benefit with changes to how the Spring Practice window is handled. These things, in addition to working/coordinating with your school's other coaches, can create a better environment for everyone involved. Greenup will hold their practices later in the day to allow for other team's practice schedules.

Again spring ball is an option, if you don't want to do it you don't have to. There are plenty of schools that don't have spring football. Even schools with turf. Don't make up excusses for everyone just because you don't want it.

"Plenty" name plenty. I really dont know of any except Trinity or St. X. They have so many players and coaches and get 4 5 extra weeks each year it's not needed.

Yes, if you got eliminated day one you COULD start the next day (I know several schools who started that week to make sure they could get in their days without possible bad weather-cause it could snow this time of year....which leads to the point of allowing schools the opportunity to choose) Either way there were snow flurries this past week, the proposal would allow them to choose what is best for their team and school. Just my opinion...nothing more.

You can't start until the MONDAY after both boys and girls eliminated from tournament. You then have 15 schools days to practice 10.

That's what I thought, unless this rule was changed just this year. It would make no sense, though, to have the rule say that you could start the day after elimination from post season basketball.

Edit: I just looked it up in the rules, and it would seem that we are correct. No practice until the Monday following the elimination from basketball post season play, unless I am misinterpreting the rule.

Bylaw 25, Section 5, part H.

Each football school may conduct ten (10) practice periods of

not more than two (2) hours in length and not more than one

practice per day over ten (10) days during the three calendar

school weeks following the school’s elimination from postseason

play in basketball. All equipment authorized by the

football playing rules may be used during this period. There

shall be no inter-school competition during this period, and all

participants shall be eligible according to all KHSAA eligibility

rules.

Dixie comes to mind right off the bat. I'm sure If I sent an email and posted the question I would get plenty of responses of those that don't have sprinig ball.

Spring "Football".....Summer hoops "Open Gym"....

When does baseball get "Fall Baseball"? The KHSAA needs to level the playing field. Would be great to have 10 days with baseball (Late Sept. or early/mid Oct.)....already fighting a yearly battle with "Mother Nature"...baseball gets the raw deal.

Don't want to take away Spring Football or Open Gym just want to make it even across the board....big time unjustice to the athletes and coachs of our national pasttime at the high school level in our commonwealth.

There is nothing holding schools back from having "open field" for baseball. To have 10 days of "fall practice" is not real feasible, because most of your baseball players are either playing in a fall league or playing a varsity sport for their school. So it is really mute point.

It does NOT say you have to start the FOLLOWING Monday...does it? You can start the next day if you choose, but once you start you have 3 calender weeks to get your 10 days in.

However, you're missing the point...still snowing the week following as well. Schools get punished when they have bad basketball teams, let the school and coach decide what is best for his kids. Wouldn't hurt to let the basketball kids have some time to get back in the weight room so they are more prepared for the hitting in spring ball. Just a thought.

Also, about the baseball thing...doesn't baseball already get to play AAU or summer ball right after their season in the summer? I think they do!

You seem to be proving my point...I'll explain it for you....Isn't this the same arguement against Spring Football....(players involved in other sports at the time of Spring Football) think so.

And you are correct...nothing to stop them from having "Open Field" however during SPring football the coachs are conducting practices that have COACHS giving (most introduce system changes at this time) instruction.....yet the KHSAA does step as baseball coachs CAN NOT give any instructions or even use school equipment (if you are following the rule to the letter) so "Open Field" there is to be ZERO coaching being done.

The point isn't mute it is truly valid point....again not looking to take anything away from other sports looking to make it equal.

They do, its called Fall ball and although the High School Coach can't coach it-they assemble the team and let a "parent' coach them all fall and play about 20 games. Football dosent have that luxery!

A couple of thoughts come to mind on the discussion of the seasons and sports.

Football and Baseball are dependent on the weather. Basketball isn't.

Let Baseball play in the spring, and continue in the summer till dead period.

Let football have 7on7's prior to dead period.

Let basketball have their camps right after dead period and before fb practice starts.

Players may have to choose between summer baseball and fb, but they have already been playing and practicing baseball and can participate when they are available while still preparing for football.

Basketball really never stops with the concept of open gym. Also, players sometimes think they want to play in June, but come November it doesn't work out - new players, new interests, etc. So is there a real benefit from requiring anyone interested in basketball to participate in June - it is five months away from the season.

Soccer and basketball can practice a lot of their skills without the whole team, baseball and especially football need the team to practice. They should be given priority prior to their seasons to prepare.

Once again someone proving my point - the HIGH SCHOOL COACHS aren't coaching....not sure how well your school follows the rule, but if they do they you should know that your HS coachs CAN NOT be associated with the team.

5 to 7 days (outside on the field) to evaluate players for the upcoming season and conduct tyrouts for athletes NOT involved in a FALL school sport would be a great tool....

As it stands now some programs have 2 to 3 days of tryouts (which is truly unfair) and make cuts without see a player hit LIVE pitching, throw to LIVE batters, or take a TRUE round of infield.....the weather disadvantage in the tryout time that is set now by KHSAA is unreal.

If I remember correclty FOOTBALL makes how many cuts....oh thats right ZERO.

Cutting a kid without truly getting a chance for them to showcase their ability and lets be honest as a coach perform a solid evaluation....excuse my language sucks!

We wouldn't ask BASKETBALL to make cuts from simply watching a kid dribble and go through conditioning.....without ever watching shoot, go after a rebound....yet in BASEBALL that is basically what happens.

In the grand scheme of things the STUDENT ATHLETES are get cheated....

Open to anything that truly levels the playing field....logic is clear on this argument....by far baseball/softball are affected by weather more so than any other high school sport....season is typically shortended (never play all games that were schedule - understand you will have rainouts, but some years it has been a 3rd or even half the season taken away --- yet to see a season in FOOTBALL or BASKETBALL when this happened)

Football sees WORSE weather than any other sport. Football starts when it's 90 plus and ends when it its often below 32 (baseball doesn't play when its that HOT!)...we just happen to play when it rains/snows and don't cancel games due to weather. Football PLAYS in bad weather...they DONT cancel!
