Kentucky Football Coaches Propose Change to Spring Football

Featured Replies

It does NOT say you have to start the FOLLOWING Monday...does it? You can start the next day if you choose, but once you start you have 3 calender weeks to get your 10 days in.

However, you're missing the point...still snowing the week following as well. Schools get punished when they have bad basketball teams, let the school and coach decide what is best for his kids. Wouldn't hurt to let the basketball kids have some time to get back in the weight room so they are more prepared for the hitting in spring ball. Just a thought.

Also, about the baseball thing...doesn't baseball already get to play AAU or summer ball right after their season in the summer? I think they do!

I'm not missing the point. I agree with your point. I am saying that I think that your interpretation as to the rule regarding the start date of spring practice is incorrect.

Are you serious....Football is a sport that can be played in any sports and with the turf fields popping up "left and right" especially in NKY weather (particularly rain) shouldn't cancel a game....guess your not custom to baseball in late March and early April that range from the low 40's to the mid 50's, if were lucky. Also, last time I checked no portion of the Football field is dirt/clay...pretty certain it is GRASS or TURF field....to enlighten you Baseballs primary playing surface (Mound/Batters Box / Base Paths) are dirt/clay....when it rains or in this cases snows it takes time for them to dryout thus cancels games....yeah GRASS Football fields do get slopply but still can pretty much play the game without concern for players health...not the case in Baseball. Think about it.....

Football sees WORSE weather than any other sport. Football starts when it's 90 plus and ends when it its often below 32 (baseball doesn't play when its that HOT!)...we just happen to play when it rains/snows and don't cancel games due to weather. Football PLAYS in bad weather...they DONT cancel!

I will say this....the message we've rec'd from our AD is absolutely no coaching at anytime outside the timeframe "Start of Tryouts 3/15 - End of Season" after that window has closed all high school coachs are to be hands off and NO high school equipment and/or fields should be utilized for any team....yeah I am sure, strike that know, there are schools that think they are doing a good job "masking it"....you know calling their Fall Ball the Braves yet is made up of all of high school players from the year before and they use the high school field and equipment and the high school coach not be the "official" coach but rather a volunteer.....the cover how WRONG and against the rules this is each and every year at the KHSAA Baseball Coachs conference....

I think they should set specific dates for spring football. Start right after the Sweet Sixteen and everyone is practicing on the same days. It seems that it would be in the KHSAA's best interests for making sure everyone is within the rules on this as well.

Make it like the dead period. Same dates every year so there is no confusion.

There is no grass left on our feild in November! Sounds to me like baseball needs to be an indoor sport. I would also wager that less than 10% of kentucky schools have turf! Poor arguement. 40's and 50's sound awesome compared to playing in the lower 30's! So how would this change with fall ball? That's the price you pay for playing an outdoor sport!!! You have similar challenges in the fall, seems like a useless arguemnet and one that probably should be moved to the BASEBALL forum.

That's actually not a bad idea, it also would not interfere with testing.

Spring break cuts in to that. Unless you change it to 4 weeks to get ten practices.

Only speak of what i know and NKY has quite a few of turf fields....SoBaseball does play in lower 30's....played during a snow fall the past two years. Again were talking about evaluating and telling a kid sorry son, your not good enough....based on what we've seen taking rubber balls of the gym floor and batting against the jug machine. The argument about Nov. your talking about what 1-2 games and that is if your teams makes the playoffs and not playing a team w/turf field...again going from what I know, NKY, COV.CATH, Highlands, Beechwood, Dixie, Simon Kenton, Scott (getting this year)....and in the past if was a playoff game that had to be played schools tend to go to a turf field be a HS not playing or a local college to get the games...so sorry but your arguement is weak.

Seems when you bring this up the Football guys tend to be on the defensive....not trying to take anything away from Football...trying to make it better for all involved....most educated people get the concept that there is "Power In Numbers"....if all coachs from the three major sports sought out change, would think more likely to get somewhere with it.

BigCatDaddy not trying to take a jab at Football simply point out the facts....how does allowing those student athletes not playing a fall sport to practice with the school baseball team for 5-10 days....please enlighten me who and what sport it hurts. Not once have I suggested that "KHSAA approved" Spring Football be taken away....just wanting to add "KHSAA approved" Fall Baseball.....

The biggest crime is how football lost the month of June. WHo cares about spring ball, give me June 7on7 back.

Nobody is saying you can't have open field and hit all fall, LOTS of schools do so. Basketball gets to do that. Baseball gets summer baseball and traveling teams, Football doesnt. Baseball has luxuries too. I think the point about the fall was you will still get 7-10 games canceled due to "bad weather", so the weather issue wont be resolved by changing when you get to play baseball. So who would it hurt to move the spring football window...same argument you have about baseball in the fall. Seems like that is all the coaches are trying to do...not take anything away from baseball.

Moving the Football window doesn't effect baseball at all...itsn't a concern.

You make a good point about the season still having games cancelled...trust me i get that...the whole thing with Fall Baseball would again deal with the evaluation process...think about they would be in prime baseball shape and mode to tryout.... your kid cuts now and the team went outside twice and he never saw live pitching, be honest, your not happy, why would you....just because that is they way it is now doesn't mean it should be and that it can't be changed.

Are you sure that you are replying to me? My post concerns spring football practice, per Bylaw 25, Section 5, part H:

h) Each football school may conduct ten (10) practice periods of

not more than two (2) hours in length and not more than one

practice per day over ten (10) days during the three calendar

school weeks following the school’s elimination from postseason

play in basketball. All equipment authorized by the

football playing rules may be used during this period. There

shall be no inter-school competition during this period, and all

participants shall be eligible according to all KHSAA eligibility

rules.

In order to conduct the spring practice sessions:

Sorry one more thing....someone is saying you can't have Fall Baseball, they KHSAA....

The arguement that baseball has fall leagues and summer doesn't apply....so when its Basketball tryouts high school coachs should just select thier teams based on how the players performed during their summer leagues...please agree the answer is NO....same regarding Baseball and summer teams and fall leagues...the High School coachs need to evaluate the guys trying out and the whole issues is having KHSAA approved Fall Baseball would help make the tryout process much better for all involved (players, coachs, etc.)

Our football field and baseball outfield actually overlap, as do other 1A schools in our area. Football action wears down a field much worse than baseball action does. When the fall rains come, the best place to be is actually in the brick dust of the baseball field. Three seasons ago, we had no grass in August/early Sept and then the rains in late Sept/Oct turned it into a mud pit. We learned that you can't lay field stripes on water. :D
