Final in 9th Region 1st round game.

Luther leads Wildcats with 26 points.

Stauffer led the Raiders with 20.

Newport's 2-3 zone was very effective against the Raiders.

Congrats to the Wildcats as they advance and play the winner of the CovCath/St. Henry.

Game was close until the 4th quarter and then Newport absolutely put it on the Raiders.

Luther and Foster single handedly led Newport to the W.

For Ryle, Stauffer seemed to be the only one who played with any sense of urgency offensively.

As Qryche said, Newport switched to a zone and Ryle had no answer. Tough night for McLeish..he looked very frustrated.

Congrats to the Wildcats on the W. They looked tough tonight.

Hot shooting also in the first half by the Wildcats.

Tucker came in and dropped a couple of three pointers and Sizemore/Luther also hit a pair.

Somewhat surprised by the margin, but Ryle goes as McLeish goes imo. They had a nice season, and finished strong.

He never seemed to get into the flow.

He is a very strong looking kid and hopefully will get a shot to play at the next level.

Ryle's entire team never seemed to get in to a flow.

Outside of Stauffer and Coleman at times, Ryle looked very flat offensively. Pinkston, Perkins and Stinson all 3 looked content with just passing the ball around the perimeter against Newport's zone.

I was hoping that Newport would rebound from the poor showing in the district finals and I think they did, in a big way! I had not seen Ryle play this year and based on what I was hearing I expected this to be better game. Newport dominated the second half, which was the difference tonight. As cold as Newport was against NCC, they were that hot tonight. Their perimeter play was outstanding tonight, whether it was shotting or driving to the bucket. And they did all this with their leading scorer only getting 6pts. They also switched to a soft zone that caused several turnovers and Ryle could not make any outside shots. I am sticking with my earlier prediction...Newport in the finals!

Congrats to Newport. They were consistent during the entire game and played very well. Good job of coaching for the Cats, too. First half was a very well played half by both teams - one of the better halfs for a spectator all year. Ryle went back to their "old" ways in the second half with lots of perimeter passing and noone able to hit the three. From now on, I will only comment about refs when it is positive - they did a super job tonight so thanks for driving up from the 16th and letting the kids play!! Best wishes to our Ryle seniors - I think it is Clay, Lee and Mitch - you are great young men. You took it on yourselves to lead the team to a district championship. Tonight was icing on the cake to highlight a sad situation at the helm of Ryle basketball - the natives are very restless in Union. Nuff said.

They must be restless in Union because they didn't come to the game. Very few people on the Ryle side. Maybe 15 -20 students, not a very good showing for a school that size.

BTW, Coach Russell had a great gameplan for Newport tonight.

I believe they played 3 different zones throughout:

2-3

1-3-1 match up

2-1-2

Not only did Newport win by this large margin. I thought almost every call went in Ryle's favor. Even some easy ones went the other way. Could have been worse.....

I'm confused as to what you're restless about. 2 regional tournament appearances in a row? And a district championship this year? I'd say things are on the way up.

Exactly. Why drive to see that?
