I agree. E-towns intent was to embarrass on to improve. You have to understand that this happens all season long though. I bet if you check the KSHAA scoreboard you could find atleast 10 games with a 70 point margin of victory. Maybe 5 games with an 80 point margin. This game is getting pub because the point margin was 100+. Whats the difference in an 80 point beat down and 115 point beat down?

Good golly...it's getting the pub because it was a blowout and the starters still played over 70% of the minutes. This margin is never good, but it is totally obvious it was meant to take a previous loss out on their next opponent...please read the attached article and the quotes.

Ya can't compare the other 5+ games, with 80pt margin of victory's, until you compare the stat lines. It's never good, but if the starters sat the majority of those games...it's not nearly as bad as pounding a team into the ground with your top player's. I would even be okay with the starters playing 70% of the game in a blowout, but for goodness sakes, play the game at a snails pace and do not demorilize the opponent.

Why should I deprive my younger kids a chance to play? On the varsity we all schedule our own games. Why schedule a game that you are only going to play 2 quarter or 3 quarters? The only time those young kids get to play in varsity games are in blow outs. As a coach you have to take the stance that every moment is a teaching moment. I have 8th graders and freshman that only see clock in games like that. I would like to think that whether we are up 40 or down 40 we are trying to get better as a team. We have been on both ends of that spectrum.

Now from what I understand, this is not what coach Mudd was doing. Judging from his comments and the comments of his players they went into that game with Fort Knox with the intention of embarrassing them, not trying to improve his team as a whole. I have no problem with blow outs as long as coaches are playing young kids in the second half and they are really trying to improve those young kids. You cant tell those young kids to bust their tails EVERYDAY in practice and then put them into a game and tell them don't play like I've asked you to practice.

Every coach is different and I respect your opinion. When I got up 20 or down 20, the bench was empty. The other team usually keeps playing at that point. So the younger players are getting experience. But in a 32 min. game. Unless there is a total collapse. The game should be over once you are up 20.

WOW!!!! 20 point lead. That's it. Did you coach before the invention of the 3 point shot? Still shooting in peach baskets? The way kids play today getting up and down the floor a 20 point lead is not a safe margin especially if its a 1st half lead. Just my opinion. 30 point lead is when I call the press off. Bench is cleared 2-3 minutes into the 3rd quarter if the 30 point margin is intact.

I am not a coach, but I would certainly think the Coach of the year - Coach Mudd, and even you Bulldog, would know enough about your competion, if not before the game, but at that point in the game when you know it is safe to empty the bench and reign in the horses so to speak. I mean, I have watched enough games that even I can tell if a team is capable of coming back from a 20 pt deficit in a lot of cases. Sometimes I would agree you might not know, but often times, I think you do.

Again, my issue with E-town and Mud is that knew going into the game they could put a whoopin on Knox, and they did that. They wanted to inflict pain in a team because they had lost the last game, and did not like that feeling. So, they did. They never backed off until it was way too late, and much much later than they should. There is no way that knox would have been able to come back, I would guess even when the lead got to 20 points.

And we do know these statements to be a fact because of the quotes by the Coach and the players after the game. Lesson learned here kids and especially Coach of the Yr. If you are going to stoop so low to be unsportmanlike then at least dont go public and run your mouths about it. The point was made on the court and shouldnt be re-emphasized again in the next days paper. I dont know if there is tension or problems between these two programs because I live in NKY and dont follow them. But to me to sit here and watch whats going on in your area certainly leads me to believe there is no love lost between someone or somebodies. Even in NKY if a team has a very intense rivaly with another school, they dont go out and destroy a team, be accused of it and then confirm their actions by going public the next day. WOW! 20n10

Etown coach should be fired. What did this prove? The word clown comes to mind.

The more I read and hear on this my old post stands.

I have been an administrator and coach for 20 years, there is no rationalization or excuse for this, sorry Bulldog, you are digging yourself a big hole here.

Agreed! I guess the point I'm trying to get across is that blow outs are part of every season. If you coach/play long enough you will find yourself on both ends. I personally don't have a problem with blowing a team out big, IF you are playing young players and attempting to develop them in your system and your style of play.

Agree. You put young players in and run half court set plays

I wrote an E-mail to the Super and I can only assume others wrote also but has anyone received a reply from anyone at E-Town yet?

Me, I hope E-town makes it to the Sweet Sixteen, then gets booed and I mean booed out of the Dibble Arena by the fans in the stands. How anyone can root/approve of this type of play in a high school sporting contest is beyond me.

I've stated again and again I don't think what E-town did was right, I'm only playing devils advocate.

If you've been a coach for 20 years you have been on the losing end of a blow out before. Imagine yourself as the Fort Knox coach, would you rather e-town continue to play you strait-up or would you rather see them go into a 4 corners style delay game and run an entire 8 minute quarter out in one possession.

If I'm the coach at Fort Knox, it would have been an even bigger slap in the face had they played "keep away" for an entire quarter.

Again my point is that the point margin is not that big of a deal. Look at the KHSAA scoreboard. Every week a smaller opponent gets beat by a large school by 70+ points. The problem was with the coach playing his starters as long as he did.

Of course we all know enough about the competition before the game. If I'm not mistaken Fort Knox is in the same district as E-town. By this time of year every coach around knows everything there is to know about district opponents. Heck he probably knows what flavor of gatorade the other team's PG drinks during time outs.

He should have been more prepared with more girls on the bench, but again I'm just spit balling here......Did E-town have a freshman girls game that night?? Maybe there was a reason they only dressed 10?

Bulldog, as a coach, I agree completely with your concept of playing "straight up". It benefits my team (if I'm losing big) if you continue to play "straight up". I don't want to see you in a four-corner stall for 8 minutes...

...but "straight up" means running an offense and defense, as opposed to simply running out the clock. Leaving your starters in is completely indefensible. Pressing and running - under the guise of "running our scheme straight-up" is frankly also indefensible. I realize you're playing devil's advocate, but in this case, this coach's actions don't even merit that half-defense. Because every team - no matter what their scheme and style - has to be able to run half-court sets at some time. Might as well work on it now. And every team's subs need more game-time play. This is their chance. In this case, there's just not even a good rationale to play devil's advocate.

It's not so much the final score that makes for a lack of sportsmanship - it's how you got there.

Can you imagine the screaming that would be coming from Etown had one of the Lady Panthers' stars been lost for the season due to an injury playing out this game????

I think there's some embarrassment down there. There's a lot of good, conscientious people throughout this state, certainly including Etown. I don't think any of the many valid criticisms aired on this thread are meant to throw a blanket indictment over all the Etown fans in general.

I would imagine that there are an awful lot of red-faced Lady Panther fans right now, and frankly, I feel for them. Not sure what I'd be saying to my alma mater if our coach allowed this to happen.

Agreed. I just thought by now someone from ETOWN would have gone public with some kind of apology to Ft Knox or explain themselves if somehow possible and move on. My guess is a little pow wow took place and the gag order was put in place throughout the system. I think the posters on here have made their point and have beat the ETOWN coach and those associated up enough over this whole fiasco. Everyone makes mistakes and everyone should be given another chance. 20n10
