Horrible, horrible stuff. Way back in the day when my parents were on a shoestring budget, potted meat sandwiches were a staple. I think my mom tried to see just how thin a layer she could spread over the bread.

 

Along with those varieties of cheese, where we recycled the jars as juice glasses, potted meat made for some nasty take-to-school lunches.

 

When I was young we ate it on crackers. Usually when I was out hunting or plinking with my Dad. That or sardines with mustard out of the can and of course sometimes vienna sausages. My Dad use to also eat goose liver lunch meat. That one I couldn't handle. :ohbrother:

I have never understood the sardines in mustard thing...but I couldn't even tell you how many guys I know who eat that as a snack when they're camping, hunting, shooting, or whatever.

Heck yeah! On a toasted onion bagel with a little bit of spicy brown mustard. Meine Familie ist deutsch - sehr Deutscher.

Then I suppose souse is totally off your menu. It's not potted meat but it's in the same ballpark. My dad loved it, as do most of the older generation in eastern Kentucky. Not so much for me.

Love braunschweiger, or as we sometimes called it, liverwurst. On a sandwich with a thick slice of onion and hot mustard.

 

Vienna sausages - not so much. Question. My wife says that they pronounced them "Vy-eenies". Bear in mind, however, that her formative years were spent in Greenup County. Anyone elso pronounce it that way?
