The season is fast headed towards March and the ninth region is once again a bowl of gumbo. Every night we look in our bowl and wonder what is that? A spicy, unpredictable hodge podge of flavors. So what do we know? Is it still Holmes clearly coming out of the ninth? Is there a dark horse that could pull off the unexpected? Which teams are the biggest surprises and biggest disappointments? Who are your district and regional winners?

Pre-season most would say the 9th was a group of three teams: Holmes, Boone County, and Highlands.

 

Boone has had some dissapointing losses but show that they can be a great team. Highlands has had flashes of brilliance and times where we scratch our head. Holmes at times looks uninterested but have the talent to be great.

 

Most said that Newports was a sleeper, I think they are proving that to be the case. If I am ranking who has the best shot at this point to win the region it looks like this...

 

Holmes, Boone County, Newport......then you can throw in Ryle, Highlands, Conner, and a few others who could make a run.

 

I think this year is shaking out to be a lot like we predicted. Anyone else?

IMO the region could breakdown to these final 8.

33rd District Boone & Ryle

34th Distrct St. Henry & Dixie

35th District Holmes & Cov. Cath

36th District Newport & New Cath

Two very good teams in Highlands & Connor being left out.

IMO could be a rematch of Boone & Holmes in the finals.

But I think that 2 teams that come in under the radar that could be dangerous are St. Henry & Ryle.

IMO the region could breakdown to these final 8.

I almost agree with what you are saying here. Conner has beat Ryle twice already this season. It is hard to beat a team a third time. I think unless Conner can knock off Boone tommorow night and get some help from Ryle, they have a rough road to regionals.

I agree tough to beat a team 3 times is why I went with Ryle, but if Connor can get there I say they could do some damage.

I think Boone would have to lose 2 of its remaining 3 district games to not win its district and get the #1 seed. They still have games at home vs. Conner, Ryle, and Cooper. #1 seed would mean a first round game against the winner of Heritage/Cooper, like last year, and a guaranteed spot in the regional tournament if they won that game.

The 33rd. could possibly look identical to last year with Ryle and Boone advancing.

Other than for District Seeding purposes, the regular season wons and losses really mean nothing. the Cream will rise to the top once the tournaments starts. In my opinion Holmes is still the team to beat followed closely by Newport and Boone County.

Looks good, however it's impossible to pick the 36th not knowing how the draw will shake out. Newport and NewCath could very easily meet in the first round, automatically knocking one out.

I agree that the draw is the only thing in the 36th (as we know that's another story) but; I am a little suprised at the lack of respect to Highlands, although they do have us scratching our heads with their performance against Ryle & Newport. Considering they haven't played a single game with every player available, they remain an intriguing mystery. Then again, they handled NC & beat Boone on the road Saturday, so it's way to premature to write them off.:idunno:

 

In the 33rd, the #1 seed is huge. Ryle's recent success and Conner's make-up (good D, guard play, depth & true big man) make both of these two a tough out. It all starts with strong D for them both and they are figuring it out !

 

The other two Districts are a little easier to predict.........a lot can change in a couple of weeks.......soups on !

Yes, just like last year.

Holmes is still the team to beat in the 9th region.

 

In 07/08 Holmes lost late in the season to Newcath and went on to win the region and make it to the state championship.

 

Last year Holmes lost at Boone Co by 7 and went on to win the state championship.

 

All last night's loss to Ryle proved was what a lot predicted from the beginning of the season....they won't go undefeated in the region because there are so many quality teams and it's a grind.

 

Let's see how Holmes does next week against Boone and Highlands before we proclaim the region to be wide open. This is still the same team that beat Newport by 18 and 10 earlier in the season.
