Boone County 63 Covington Catholic 36

The bigs are the strength of this year's Cov. Cath. squad. Thelan, Wellbrock and Conley can take care of business around the rim. The achilles heal of the team is the guard play. The three best point guards on the squard are Evans (injured - played 0 minutes) Pauly (sick- played 13 minutes) and Mashinot (injured - played 0 minutes). At full strength everything would have had to go right for the Colonels to beat the Rebels. The Colonel squad that took the court tonight was waaaay overmatched. Congratulations to Boone County on an impressive victory.

The only bright spot in this game for CovCath was Andrew Schult's performance off the bench. To the best of my knowledge this was the earliest he's made an appearance in a varsity game this year and he came in with a fire and intensity that was lacking. While not always the most polished player, he gives this team something that it needs, no-fear, all-or-nothing intensity.

The rest of the game for CovCath was pretty much a giant soup sandwich.

Connelly too added some fire, perhaps too much fire at times but when someone is kicking your teeth in you have to show a little attitude. Schult and Connelly are a formidable press tandem for sure.

I don't think that I've ever been so off in a game prediction in my life.

From the wonderful pics that paNDA supplied it looked like the entire game was played above the rim?

Great shots!

So you take, Gabbard, Popp and one of the other guards out of the game totally, and oh yea, one of the other ones too is sick and can only play a few minutes, and Boone would be the same team???????? I know Boone is solid, but there is no way they would have been the same. No way can you say it would not have mattered.

I see your point but Boone is very deep so it would not have mattered near as much as it did to CCH. But your point is true for CCH, losing your starting guards really hurts. When the starters have been struggling then having to play the backups are surely going to make things very difficult.

Boone had their way inside in this game. Score might have been slightly different but result the same.

In fact it was not just the starters, but the first two who have been coming off the bench! This team obviuosly had a bad night, but last night was the most under-manned team they have played. It was not too long ago that I sat in the gyms at Ryle and Conner and both games they walked out as victors goodness sake. My point is they are a much, much better team than they showed last night. If the two teams face each other again, I hope Boone assumes they will face the same team/game plan they saw last night.

I agree but was any of this due to the fact that the Cov Cath guards could not pressure the ball or get in the passing lanes to prevent the Boone guards from being able to get the ball inside??

So King, knowing that they were down two guards with another on a ventilator, what did CovCath do to change their game plan? It didn't look like they attempted to make any adjustments. Teams, especially ones as long and deep as Boone, are simply not going to allow CovCath to dish it up to Thelen & Wellbrock without a challenge.

Panda, I agree that Connelly adds some fire, but he needs to focus some of that fire on the offensive end of the court. The coach is either telling him to or letting him spend way too much time north of the free throw line.

This game also showed that the Colonels need to hit the weight room much harder. They had way too many balls ripped from their hands. Gabbard looked like Adonis compared to some of the Colonels.

Mikey Gabbard is the most complete player in the 9th region. He is the floor general, plays very strong and tenacious D, penetrates and dishes, and can hit from mid-range. Boone is a good team, but not a great team. If you can keep the ball out of Gabbard's hands, Boone will get beat, especially against a team that will press them. TOG, how many turnovers did Boone have? It seemed like they had more than the Colonels. While the Boone bigs played well on both ends in the paint, they did their best Carson Palmer vs. the Jets impersonation in the open court; every pass seemed to sail high, untouched, incomplete, out of bounds, or intercepted. To Boone's credit, their defense was very strong and made it happen. CovCath really couldn't do a thing all night. I think the end result would've been the same regardless of who was in the backcourt for the Colonels.

Great Pics paNDA as always!!!! You do a great job of capturing the game!!!!

I sounds to me that Boone (sickness/injuries) was finally at full strength Cov. Cath. (sickness/injuries) wasn't. I don't know if the results would have changed, however, I'm sure the game would have been much more competitive.

Looks like Boone had a very balanced scoring attack (4 in double figures) in this one. Hopefully, this team is coming around and can finish the season strong. Looks like Gabbard got back on track in this one as well.

Let's hope they get a chance to meet again, that would mean it would be in the Regional Tournament. The goal of both teams.

Other than Wellbrock & Thelen noone even looks to score.

I do not know how many times CovCath pass the ball around for 30 to 40 seconds only to turn it over, there gaurds passing up shots .IMO CovCath plays much better up tempo and with Connelly in the line up.

SHOOT THE BALL

PS. So much for everyone saying how they were going home to watch Kentucky win.

It wasn't just that. Boone seemed to win the battle of the boards too, and Cov Cath big men were only effective inside with the ball a couple times when they got it.

Well Scout, you are wrong about one minor thing, they were infact down three who did not dress, along with Max being sicker than a dog. But, I saw no adjustment what so ever. I was very disappointed. To me it seemed like coach admitted defeat before tip-off and just wanted to get thru the game without losing another player. I was very disappointed in the coaching of this game. Why not bring the high energy guys, such as Schult, in sooner? Why did Thelen only play 25 mins, even though he only had 2 fouls? Heimbrock was the only guys who seemed to want to take an outside shot, yet he was pulled almost every time he scored it seemed like. Mattie was lighting them up in warm-ups, and he as well got little playing time IMO when he could have possibly opened it up more for Jake and Trevor.
