Slug - Boone did finish the game with 20 TO's according to the Stats I saw. Thsi does surprise me as I thought they would be more solid with the ball.

One thing that I would like to ask though to all about the game last night - - The game was obviously over very early - Are you surprised at all how much time the Boone starters played? All 5 of their starters logged over 20 mins, and Gabbard, Cotton and Montgomery all played 28 minutes in a blow-out. For a team as deep as Boone, why did not others see the floor more?

Similiar to their Holmes and Highlands game, the Colonels played fairly even with the Rebels out of the gate. The 1st quarter ended with Boone Co. up 13-11. There were 9 lead changes and 2 ties during the quarter. The 2nd quarter was an old fashion trip to the woodshed for the Colonels. At half Cov. Cath. was down 32-17. It got worse from there.

So true

I believe the score was 19-15 with about 5 minutes to in the quarter.

CovCath only got off a couple of shots the last 5 minutes.

Connelly too added some fire, perhaps too much fire at times but when someone is kicking your teeth in you have to show a little attitude. Schult and Connelly are a formidable press tandem for sure.

I agree when Schult and Connelly are in there together they give teams fits.

When they face teams that are able to shut down the inside game, as Boone did last night, they need to utilize those two to change the tempo of the game. With the exception of Thelen this team does not have a pure scorer. Riedinger can be effective from the outside at times, but he can not create his own shot. So if you can't get your half court game going, you need to make it a sloppy full court helter skelter game.

Don't get me wrong I am not saying that this CovCath team should always employ that type of strategy, but there are times plan A isn't going to work, you need to have a plan B. This teams plan B can not be shoot from the outside, they just don't have the shooters to do that. What they do have is a bench full of good athletes (not great but good) like Connelly, Schult, Baker, Robinson, Klein, Wilson etc. who will give 110% effort on defense. When Maschinot, Hudepohl and Evans come back it only makes this a more viable alternative against certain teams.

Basketball is a game of matchups, sometimes the matchups don't favor your team. You have to be willing to try to change something to change the match ups.

Am I the only one who doesn't understand the logic of holding for the last shot with a minute left in the half, when you are down 15?

Seems to me you want as many posessions as possible when you are down double digits. This is not the first time they have done that either, can anyone fill me in on why they continue to do this?

Good question. The game was well in hand by the start of the 4th quarter.

Joey Lay for Boone (#50) played his best game of the year, finally feeling healthy. He completely shut down Thelan. WoW what a great job of defense. Cotton did a Great job defensivley on Wellbrock also and when Earls and Brown came in they picked up with the same instensity on "d" with CC's bigs.

Welcome Back Mikey Gabbard!! Your intensity and focus showed tonight. If you lead the rest will follow!

Cov Cath was completely out matched last night. This is not your normal Colonels team, Thelan is a great talent and Wellbrock brings some great energy but they have to develop some guards if they want to make it over the hump. A lot of talent in the ranks in Park Hills though so I think this drought will end soon. Colonels need to get their swagger back.

If you listen, there is a collective groan in the stands at the end of each period when this happens. The groan can be heard above the noise of the crazies.

Is that the coaches lack confidence that their defense can hold for a few seconds? That is the only plausible explanation I can come up with.

I think those two points go hand-in-hand. I think Coach realized he had some ball-handling issues (against the press) that needed to be addressed and worked on. Just guessing at their practice today, the Reb players may be questioning whether they won or lost by 27 last night.

Someone earlier mentioned that Gabbard looked like Adonnis compared to the CCH guards; he is one of the most astute "hand-checkers" I've seen in a while. With his strength and technique, he virtually dictated where the Colonel guards could go.

I agree with your point, but then those kids have to score. Schult appears to be confident enough to put the ball up from anywhere ( and that is not a bad thing!). Connelly needs to either drive or shoot a little bit more. The same could be said for a bunch of those kids last night. The one guy who was shooting from outside was Heimbrock and it seemed they yanked him whenever he got hot.

Gabbard is very physically strong for his size and has worked hard to get there. Looks very muscular.

May have seemed that way, but it was not that way. Cole came out to start the second quarter. He made a basket one minute in. He played the whole 2nd quarter. He had an assist on the basket at the end of the 1st half by Wilson. Cole started the 3rd quarter and a minute in he had a turnover. He left the game at the 5:37 mark of the 3rd quarter. He came back in 90 seconds later. He had a FG a minute after that. A minute later he had another turnover and then Coach L took him out. So 13 minutes of play and the only sub to play more was Connelly with 18 minutes. His production was 2 field goals and 2 turnovers, no rebounds and 1 assist. Things are not always as them seem. Also a sad state when one shot constitutes hot.

I agree this was the case last nite with who was playing guard for the Colonels, but I do not think he would have had the same level of success had the three other guys played. Maybe some, but not as much
