Thousands protest sheriff's immigration efforts

PHOENIX – Ten thousand immigrant rights advocates marched in front of a county jail in Phoenix Saturday in a protest that was aimed at Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's immigration efforts and was marked by a clash between a small group of protesters and police officers.

Organizers say the protest was meant to show officials in Washington that Arpaio shouldn't handle immigration enforcement, and that Congress and the Obama administration need to come up with a way for immigrant workers to come to the country legally.

The three-mile walk that started in a west Phoenix park ended by afternoon at the Durango Jail Complex, a collection of five jails, where officials played music, including a record by singer Linda Ronstadt, to drown out noise made by protesters. Ronstadt took part in Saturday's protest.

Protesters chanted "Joe must go" as they approached the jail complex. One person carried a sign that said "We are human" and bore a picture of a lawman with a wolf's face. A family of five wore T-shirts saying "Who would Jesus deport?"

What's this country coming to when law enforcement officers start enforcing the law? Madness.:eyeonyou:

The law of the land should be upheld. If one believes the law is wrong have it changed, until then the law is to be upheld. We have a system that these lawbreakers should have followed. Just because they chose to break the law does not give them the right to tell us what to do in our country. Let them go back to their home country and enter legally.

, drowning out Linda Ronstadt

I believe the law says the immigration enforcement belongs to federal authorities. so you are right, the law should be enforced and Arpaio should quick running roughshod over the rights of citizens.

But if illegal immigrants are found breaking the law (local, state, or federal) in the U.S., they are to be sent back to where they came, according to immigration laws.

Wow..............they are not citizens................

This makes zero sense....end of story.

I was wondering if I read that right.

Not to speak for acemona, but he may be referring to the protesters who may certainly be US citizens that are promoting immigration reform.

Bank fraud is a federal crime. However, if local law enforcement sees bank fraud, they do not wait to call in federal officers they make arrests and get search warrants until federal officers arrive, and then turn prosecution over to the feds. Its not brain science, and Arpaio is simply enforcing laws that others won't.

Arpaio is doing racial profiling and CITIZENS are being caught in his net. Pay attention to the whole story and what ALL of the protests are about. It is not just about deporting non-citizen criminals. Arpaio is a racist or maybe a xenophobe looking to make a name for himself.
