Everyone has sad stories. My family struggled, according to great grandparents, when they migrated to the US. The happiest day of their lives was when they took the othe to become citizens. Nobody made sure that things were multi lingual or that they received "free" rides to help them get on thier feet. They worked, legally and hard for everything they got. I am sure that if they were alive today, they would be appaulled by the "free" rides we afford illegal immigrants today.

 

I wonder if our ancestors that were immigrants could make it to become citizens today, though. Would they have had the funds available ahead of time?

So, my family has to struggle to send my kids to college. We pay way to much for their health care. We pinch pennies every month to try and save a little. Yet my tax dollars can afford people that do not pay taxes, and could, all of those things? Sounds to me like you are being uncaring and unfeeling to the kids of Legal, tax paying US citizens.

 

I should not have to press 1 for english. If I moved to a foreign country would they make sure that I could use an ATM in MY language?

If we had allowed GWB to pass forth his immigration legislation then illegal immigrants would be paying for their own care right now, as guest workers. I'd be all for requiring classes to begin learning English as part of a realistic process for becoming a legal citizen.

 

The illegal immigrants that I deal with do not want free healthcare. Usually then avoid healthcare. If they have to go, they pay for it out of their own pockets. I've known ones that tried to pay taxes even, but of course, weren't allowed to.

 

We are not talking about people that DON'T work. We are talking, instead, about people that work 7 days a week. Many, if given the opportunity to become begin a realistic process to become legal citizens would gladly do so and would gladly contribute to their own care.

Yes they should pay some penalty and perhaps even be deported. It's not the fault of the laws rather the fault of their parents that brought them here. Come to think of it isn't using children in the comission of a crime a crime in and of itself? If so then that anotehr law the parents have just ignored.

 

At what age should he be deported? Now that he is 23 and has only ever known life in America. It's not my fault or your fault, but it's also not his fault.

Additionally, what do we do with kids born to illegals in the US. The kids are now American citizens. Do we ship back the parents only? Do we send the now American citizen child back with the parents?

 

Again, this does not have to be a two way road. It's not either A) give them all amnesty or B) round them all up and put them on buses back across the boarder. Neither of those are a realistic solution. Yet, too many won't budge from solution B. I honestly don't know anyone that wants solution A, and that includes the illegal immigrants that I know personally.

Robbing a liquor store and entering the country illegally are not equitable crimes. It's illegal to speed. I've done it. Am I equitable to a child rapist? Not all crimes are equal.

 

I am a high school teacher. I teach the kids that are in my classes, regardless of who they are and where they come from. If that means that I am aiding criminals, then so be it. I don't get to pick and choose which kids I teach. Along the way, I become very close with many of them and their families. This is something that I am proud of and it makes me thankful to be a teacher. For example, a student of mine that was a troublemaker in high school is now in the Air Force. I was pretty much the only teacher in high school that would give him the time of day, as he was really terrible in other classes, but not mine. He humbled me after his graduation from basic training by telling me that I was the biggest influence in getting his life on the right track. Today, he deployed for Haiti, to help in the relief effort. In a tiny little way, I feel like I am helping the Haitian people. I do my job and I am proud of it and will not make excuses for it. My students are important to me, whether they be legal or illegal, immigration-wise or any other law-wise.

As a teacher, I can tell you that you are off about the funds available for illegal immigrants and your kids, as regards college. Illegal immigrants cannot receive any government financial aid. For example, you are probably aware that your kids earn money for college based on their GPAs every year. Illegal immigrant students cannot do that. They can earn it, but they can't use it, so therefore it's worthless. Your kids can apply for college using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Here, students that are eligible can apply for grants and other aid. Illegals cannot do this. Granted, this doesn't help those once a certain family income has been established. However, none of it is available to illegals.

 

I, myself, came from a family in poverty. I was determined enough in high school to earn an academic scholarship based on ACT scores, GPA and extracurricular activities. As a result, I earned a full scholarship to WKU (go 'Toppers!), though I would have been eligible for a great deal of need based financial aid. In addition, I worked three jobs to affort my car (a 77 Caprice Classic, though I graduated HS in 1992) and living expenses.

 

Illegals aren't getting a free college education, though your kids certainly can get aid. Illegals do get the same free public education that your kids can get, though the vast, vast number of them go into the work force before they get a diploma.

I expect anyone who entered this country illegally to pay a substantial penalty (either in the form of fines or deportation) and to then go through the proper channels to residency and/or citizenship behind those that have attempted to do it the right way. Anchor children are a whole different story. You are correct by merit of being born in the US they are automatically citizens but the fact remains that their parents are still criminals. It's a very hard question but in my mind the parents need to pay a penalty for their actions. I would be all for reforming the current immigration laws only if any form of amnesty is removed. History has shown that all amnesty programs do is encourage more people to come here because once the problem gets big enough we'll just give them amnesty again.
