The Independent Schools are going to be the real losers if...

Featured Replies

Prop 1 passes.

Under Prop 1 all students living outside the school district (of a public or independent school) they are attending will have to sit out one year of athletics which is almost a death sentence.

However, as long as you live within 20 miles of a private school you will not have to sit out at all.

If you are confused consider this example of how that will give private schools a huge advantage over both public and independent schools. I live in Florence, if I want to send my child to Beechwood (I went to Beechwood) he has to sit out a year. However, if I want to send my kid to Covington Catholic I could do so with no strings attached under Prop 1.

If Prop 1 passes the real losers will be schools like Beechwood and Highlands and not the private schools. In fact, it could make the private schools even better (see example above).

Interesting stuff!

Let me know when he's an 8th grader. I can introduce you to the CCH principal. ;)

If your child has already started at a school outside of their district, does he/she have to sit out?

Male and Manuel would be the winners.

If you're asking if there is a 'grandfather clause', the proposal does not mention it. I guess that could be negotiated.

Thanks 98, I didn't mean to slight NCC, they are both fine schools and he could go to NCC too but not Beechwood or Highlands.

If I am misunderstanding Prop 1 anyone please help me out?

What if the kid comes into an independent district the summer of his frosh year? Or are we talking transfering after they start HS?

I think you're right Guru. I was reading it trying to find a "no greater than 20 miles" or "equal to 20 miles." It just doesn't say that. It pretty much limits them to kids in their city, unless they want to sit out a year.

BTW, this will affect a lot more people than everyone thinks...

"...not to exceed the boundaries of the state."

If you're asking what if the family moves into the independent school district at some point, no they w0uld not have t osit as their bonafide residence would be within the boundaries.

Interesting question posed by the Guru. Don't some schools have reciprocal agreements, that allow student-athletes to attend schools out of their boundaries and if so, would that be affected.

I wonder what 8th grade student-athletes will do, if this proposal passes. If I read Proposal #1 correctly, it did not mention any grandfathering but stated setting out 1 year, if not within the boundaries. So a child could attend from K-8 and then be forced to make a decision, either set out or transfer. I can see this getting very intense, not to mention the loss of tuition which some schools generate, from out of district students.

I can see "For Sale" signs being put in many front yards, if this passes. To me, the real winners in this proposal is the Real Estate Agents.

No, I mean: What if someone from Erlanger sends their kid to Beechwood the summer between their 8th and frosh year? Or does this rule mean after a student starts their frosh year?

My understanding is, they could be going to beechwood middle school in 7th grade but still come your freshman year of HS you would have to sit out a year if you still live outside the district.

This is the way I read it also. I don't like this part of the equation. I would agree if it said the first year they go to a school outside their district.

Example: Guru sends Guru Jr. to Beechwood middle school, he cannot participate in football his 6th grade year (his 1st year at Beechwood middle)but is eligible his 7th and up.

I can say if these go though that the prediction of the Rep from Pike Co. will come true. The end of the KHSAA.

Why would Beechwood, Highlands, and I think Danville is an independent, put up with this? Join the privates, Hold the Private/Independents state title games the same days as the KHSAA's.
