I was at the game and saw this happen. The players were lining up at the lane for a free throw and the ball was laying on the floor, on the out of bounds line in the end zone, not moving or rolling so it didn't need to be chased, just picked up. The ref was standing under the basket a little off center and the ball was just a couple feet from him but he made a player come to the end zone, pick it up, give it to him and then resume her position and then he threw it to the shooter for the free throws. It just looked really strange to say the least. I mean he was right there.

Botton line is if a player has ANY sense he/she will do whatever they can to please a ref. Just like in football when a player scores a TD he can always makes points with the official by handing the ball to the official, not dropping it on the ground. How hard is it for a 17 year old to pick up the ball for goodness sake.

There was absolutely no trash talking or anything of the sort, like I mentioned in another post it was a very well played game with a lot of sportsmanship from both teams (girls helping each other up and patting on back). I dont know if you have ever been to our gym but if you have I was in the endzone very near the foul lane and you can hear everything said...

 

Dont get me wrong I respect most officials I have several friends that are officials at all levels, but like someone else on here it just struck me as funny that any official would ask anyone to get the ball when all they would have to do was bend over and get it. He would not even had to take his eyes off the players, the other official did pick up the ball a couple times and no fights broke out. And maybe others on here are right maybe its just unprofessionalism. I think thats a growing problem not only with basketball officials.

The officials, at least in the BBA, are evaluated by their supervising officials, just like those of us at work are.

I have no problem with officials not retrieving loose balls. However, with that sudden energy saving technique, you would think they would be able to go to midcourt and give the scorer's table the information instead of being lazy and trying to signal the foul from across the floor and through players. To me, that's the biggest form of laziness I see out of officials. Go to midcourt like you're taught.

I am not sure they are taught to do that anymore. I believe they are now taught to call the foul as they are presently doing.

Some regions will signal from where they are standing even if its down on the baseline. Others will have their officials follow the NFHS policy and go to the designated zone for reporting.

Humm well I didnt have a child playing. However if I did I would have told him to pick up the ball. And for his sake he better hope he wasn't being evaluated, but since I know most of the officials and happened to see almost everyone coming in that night I am 99% sure he wasn't, again thats a good thing for him.

I'm surprised this thread garnered 41 previous postings and 42 including mine.

Maybe we should start getting ball boys & girls (ala tennis) that would dress up really preppy & dash quickly to retrieve a ball when it's loose.

I agree with most of the posts about refs not supposed to be chasing balls, but if its close enough I think it is just lazy to make a player go alot farther than the ref jus to pick up a ball. There are two maybe three refs at a high school game if a player is gona punch another player someone will probably see it, but how often does that even happen? If the ball is close enough I think they should just grab it, no big deal.

Keeping your eyes on the kids is to catch the comment, taunt or nudge that leads to the punch. Punches very rarely happen because the officials look for issues before they escalate.
