I personally dont have a problem with the Refs not chasing balls. I agree, the Refs need to focus on the shenaighans (sp) that typically take place during a dead ball between players. Usually, when games are played not in this type of enviroment there is always people in the gym (ie - cheerleaders and others) in the endzones of the court that help out along with fans in the front row of the stands. Typically one observes what happened this weekend again in Holiday tourneys and AAU games. Go Ft. Thomas, 20n10.

Officials are not supposed to chase loose balls. That's pretty much the bottom line.

 

Also, you complain about a "tired" ballplayer having to get the basketball (per the rule) as if the officials aren't tired at all. Perhaps you can join an officials association, learn the rules, and do the job as you see fit.

 

As it is, I have seen officials MANY TIMES make up for the laziness of teams that, right before the game or before halftime is over, simple toss the loose balls on the court instead of putting them on the rack (this burns me up and the team that I root for is one of the worst at it). Often, as the game hasn't begun, I see the officials get the balls and put them on the rack.

 

Officials aren't always right. They are, after all, human. But let's not let those of us that don't bother to do the job and don't know the rules like they do diss the vast majority of excellent officials.

You'd rather retrieve the ball than watch for dirty "play" during dead ball time?

If the ball was truly a step away from the ref he could have left it there until he saw that everything was under control. He could have then picked it up once he knew his partner was in place.

Absolutely not! I think players should retrieve balls that have gotten away. I never took my eyes off the players until I was sure everything was in control. The game I was watching was filled with great sportsmanship with girls helping each other up and pats on the back type game. And yes the ball was truly that close to the official.

I was at the game and saw this happen. The players were lining up at the lane for a free throw and the ball was laying on the floor, on the out of bounds line in the end zone, not moving or rolling so it didn't need to be chased, just picked up. The ref was standing under the basket a little off center and the ball was just a couple feet from him but he made a player come to the end zone, pick it up, give it to him and then resume her position and then he threw it to the shooter for the free throws. It just looked really strange to say the least. I mean he was right there.

Once, when I was involved in a game, I injured myself during the game and had to tough it out. I could not have picked a ball up if I wanted to. Maybe this official was feeling some back pain, maybe not. I was not there to witness, but I am sure there was a justified reason for doing this the way it was done.

I agree Clyde. I am guessing the player that he asked to pick up the ball hadn't dropped it instead of handing it to the ref in the first place? I have seen this done as a "teaching moment" regardless of where the ball is in relation to the ref.
