Can someone take another shot and explain to me what the $250 is for? I am sure that an admission is charged for the fans... so let's not use that as an excuse...

I can honestly say, I assume the money is for the rings the players receive. That's my guess.

 

I would say the admission money and sponsors pay for most everything else.

Northern Kentucky has an East West game in the Spring. Each player keeps their game jersey, there is probably a smackling of scouts watching the game... small admission to get into the game. So, I am still confused why the charge of $250 to participate. I had a son participate in the Kentucky East West game a few years ago and we did not pay a dime for that great experience. Both squads spent several days at WKU for practice and had meals provided.

It was $300 this year. If this is for the ring then it should be left up to the player and their families as to whether they want to purchase one or not.

Thanks Ram! I did not realize they received rings. I now see it discussed about 23 posts prior to this one...

Lets see.....insurance, lodging at the Cumberland Inn, Food for three days, sweats, rings, field paint, somebody to paint it, buses and drivers to transport players, trainers supplies, uniforms (jerseys kept by the kids) rent of practice facilities, promotions advertising (they don't give that stuff away)

they also have a nice banquet for the kids with a guest speaker (they usually don't come for free either) food for the banquet (don't give that away either) Stadium prep and clean up has to be paid for.....

 

Maybe you can do it cheaper but nobody does anything for free, and donors don't give as much money as you think...It takes alot of money to put one of these things on..

 

Oh some other thing I just thought of...postage sending the forms out, printing of programs, sombody to put them together, press packets,....

 

There is a TREMENDOUS amount of expense putting this bowl together, and seriously it is only 250.00 I am sure everyone here has wasted that much in a drunken weekend when they were younger.

 

Honestly it just seems to me that a few folks want to tear down or question the motives of the men who DO DONATE all their time to promote football in Kentucky and Tenn. I have talked to those guys in the past they work year around on it trying to make it better and bigger every year. They deserve at least my thanks if not eveyones here.

Raceland had two players play in the Border Bowl last year, and I am pretty sure one of the fathers told me that they payed the money to pay for the rings. I may be wrong, or he may have misunderstood, but that is how I remember it.

 

Also, I went to the game last year, it did seem well done and a nice event.

We were unaware of the cost upfront and were surprised to find out it was due within a week of the notification. Quite frankly we don't have a spare $300 just hanging around. Some people do and that is great. We don't. Just saying it would have been nice to have been made aware there was a fee from the beginning. Then maybe we could've put the money away or used it as part of a Christmas present or something. If the ring is the big cost then perhaps the player should have the option of not getting the ring so they can play if money is an issue. Also, while our boosters might have paid the fee we didn't feel it was right to ask. So, we didn't. We wouldn't accept it even if they offered. It was an honor to be nominated and selected to play anyway. Congratulations to all who were nominated and selected and good luck in the game. GO KENTUCKY! It is a nicely run event and I am sorry if this sounded like we didn't think so. :isurrender:

That surprises me that you didn't know. Our son was told when he received the phone call invite which was the second week of Dec. I did feel that it was a pretty fast turn around to get the info. back after receiving the packet. It just came right in the middle of the Holiday rush.

And that game is no longer in existance, correct? If so, I'm guessing it's because they didn't make enough money on the game to cover the costs of putting the game on. While I'd rather see the kids not have to pay anything to play in this game, if paying the fee is what is needed for now to keep the game economically feasible, then that's the way it has to be. No one is forcing any one to play in the game. At a lot of schools you have to pay a fee to play football on the high school team ( I know the players for Highlands do) and the school actually makes money off the varsity football program! Not sure why folks have their boxers in a bunch over paying a fee to play in an all star game that I presume is barely breaking even. Of course, if I was to learn the Border Bowl was making a bunch of money, while charging kids to play, my thoughts might change somewhat. Then again, a kid doesn't have to pay the fee if he doesn't want to: he just doesn't get to play in the game. Sort of like joining BGP. If you don't want to pay the annual fee, just don't join. It's that simple.

 

As for the timing of when the players learned about the fee, my understanding is the same as Henry's. Didn't Mueller check with the players he was nominating and let them decide if they wanted to be nominated and didn't he tell them about the fee at that time? Henry would know better than me because she was more involved.

The nomination forms are sent to the coaches in late Oct and must be returned Nov 1. The coach can nominate two players. The information about the $300 is on the nomination forms. I would assume the players would be told by their coach. Being nominated does not guarantee the player will be chosen.

I saw the form but on the one we got there was no mention of any fee. The coach never mentioned a fee being involved. I understand why there is a fee. We just couldn't pay that right now. Bills are due and we didn't have it. However, it is a great opportunity for players. Congratulations once again to those selected.

I think that when players turn it down by not playing then they ask other's that will fill those positions that they need.

Who is going to this game? I am wanting to go as one of the kids I have been assisting in getting his information out to colleges is playing. After sitting in the cold at the Music City Bowl, I don't know if I want to freeze my tail off again! My feet still haven't warmed up from that game.
