I have no problem with defensive basketball, and with the Godfather of the slow down game in the stands that makes it even better!!

 

Sounds like it was a good one, I just hate seeing teams slow down when they have the ability to move the ball up and down the floor at a quicker pace. I have seen both teams in game situations that this style has cost them the "W"

 

But that is only opinion, and we all know opinions and a $1.05 will get you coffee at most places the day after the game.

Interesting reading about the great game CovCath played vs. Ryle (51-50), but the CC--BB game (45-36) is like watching paint dry--Really that much different??

Mustang told me to enjoy my hum-drum regular season game. How much more hum-drum could this one have been. All this game needed was for Coach Schlarman to be there blessing his disciples!!

O.K.! I'll admit that at times throughout the 16-14 first half I might have been in agreement with you. It was pretty painful, even for this Mustangs fan.

 

However, the game opened up in the second half and both teams had their moments.

 

When two top defensive teams, like ourselves and the Camels get together it is going to be a slug-fest. It's certainly not slow-down, it's just tough getting into offenses. It's also how small, seemingly undermanned teams are able to beat the big run-gun teams. To the Camels credit, that may have been the hardest I've ever seen a Campbell County team play - ever!

 

We know we can't go up and down with most big athletiic teams, so we have to play great defense, work harder for high-percentage shots, cut down on our turnovers, and limit our opponents' high percentage shot opportunities. It works for us. It is amazing how many people object to our style of winning.

Nice to see Coach S the "G-Father" of slow it down methodical basketball in the crowd. I wonder if ge will be at BOKC tonight to watch his former Bluebirds Fly up and down the court scoring in the 70's or will that be too much for the G-Father to take? Lol

Seriously that was a nice gesture and he did have success out there and the Stang fans should be happy to have had him. With that said they have a dandy of their own now in Code. Nobody talked much about the battle of the brothers here. Has that been played out at this point?

Well stated, a win is win for whatever style you play. I just think that sometimes the ones that play the slow down game play it because they are comfortable with it, and that it does not always suit the kids.

Is their any appreciation at all for how hard our coaches work to get our kids to play the kind of defense that they play??? To get them to learn and perfect a defensive system??? How hard they work to get them to value the possession of the ball??? How hard they work to limit turnovers??? How hard they work to create high percentage shots??? How hard they work to get kids to stand in and take charges????

 

Anybody can coach a high school basketball team if all you are going to do is allow them to run up and down the floor, make two passes and fire up a shot on each possession. It then boils down to who has the best offensive talent, or who has the best shooting night.

 

This is strictly an example being used to make a point: Pendleton County is capable of scoring 90-100 points per game - if you let them. With that being the case going into game against the Wildcats, we know we can't score that many points on our best day, and to get into a run-gun shootout with them would be suicidal. We know that if we can play great defense and limit them to the fifties and trade high-percentage shot for high-percentage shot that we have a chance to beat them. Isn't it smarter for us to take that approach instead of losing 90-75??? According to your thinking the answer is no - go play an up-down game, get your brains beat in, but provide the fan with more entertainment value for their bucks.

 

To me that would be the easy way out. We could cut our practices down to an hour a day. Spend half an hour on shooting drills, scrimmage for the next half hour, and go .500 on the season, beating the teams where we have more talent and losing to those that we don't.

 

Maybe we want something more than that from our teams. Maybe our kids get satisfaction from beating teams that on paper they shouldn't. Maybe instead of getting excited about a "3" we take more satisfaction in taking a charge. Maybe by playing great defense we are in every game we play. Maybe we are just a bunch of sickos destroying eveyone's fun by playing to our best advantage.

 

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Willie Schlarman and Mike Code have combined to win 243 games, while losing 132 at Brossart. In doing so, we have been 10th Region Champions, 10th Region Runners-up, twice Number One in No Ky in the final coaches polls, five time district champions, two time NKAC Division II Champions, seven time 10th Region "A" Champions, All "A" State Champions, and All "A" State runners-up. All this with an enrollment of around 380 kids 9-12 co-ed, using primarily home-grown kids.

 

What's not to like???

Mustang's point is very well-taken. The object of the game is to win. In any sport there are varying coaching styles, all of which can be successful. But unless you are going to be blessed with outstanding talent year in and year out, you cannot just throw the boys out there to run up and down and take the first open shot they get and expect to be successful on a consistent basis. Further, and maybe I am in the minority, I think there is much beauty in watching a disciplined, fundamentally sound, hard-nosed defensive team play even if the score is low. The successes of the Brossart program over the last several years speak for themselves for the wisdom of their style of play.

I think Mustang makes a good point. Brossart does what they do very well and have done so for quite some time. Yes it can be difficult on the eyes for those in the stands but at the end of the night it doesn't matter how many points are on the board, just matters if you have more than your opponent. We (SK) haven't played the Stangs in a while but when we did I knew they would be in our face on defense, and they would make us work on the defensive side.
