Well, you can tell it is the offseason when old threads start to generate discussion again. But what the heck, I'll put in another two cents.

It seems the big debate is whether Mayfield or Hazard is #2. I don't buy the argument by Blackshirts that Hazard was playing better at the end of the year. Mayfield shut out 3 of their playoff opponents including Beechwood. This debate is ongoing because Hazard's game versus LCA was closer than Mayfield's. And let's remember, that championship game score is not reflective of a game that was still close late in the 3rd quarter. LCA racked up the points in Q4 to make that game look much worse than it truly was. Plus, we all know how that common opponent game gets played. Heck look at the scores in Mayfield's two games versus Crittenden County and it is clear how inconclusive comparing scores can be.

Big games so often come down to how teams match up, in particular the stars on each team, and you really don't know that till they step on the field against each other. I think the talk about a big line play advantage to Hazard is definitely debateable. After watching the championship game, I don't think LCA's line outplayed Mayfield's line nearly as much as others have stated. Lucas Witt's scrambling and escapability made his line look good. I think Mayfield's line would hold their own versus Hazard. The matchups I want to hear about from those touting Hazard are how would Hazard stop Shelton and Murrell? I think Shelton would be the difference in a matchup against Hazard. He is one of the best players I have seen in 1A in the past few years.

I have to go with Mayfield as #2. They are solid all around and with Shelton they have a player who can make the big plays you need in a tough matchup. I would put Hazard #3 and then it's a toss up for me at #4 between Beechwood and Crittenden County.

Nice post Voice, BUT, I have to remain on the "Hazard #2" bandwagon. Primarily because of the spanking they laid on my Harlan team (Don't remember the score ) prior to playing LCA. Before anyone says Harlan is not the same caliber, I agree. Those top 3 to 5 teams in 1A are in a class by themselves.

I can't speak intelligently about Mayfield, but I can about Hazard. They are very physical and well balanced. We had a 2,000 (+/-) yard tailback that did not have 50 yards vs the Hazard D and he ran behind a very good offensive line. Also, holding one the state's best (Hayden) to 177 yds on 27 carries is not bad.

LCA may have put up points late on Mayfield which could have been a depth issue. I believe Hazard's close game with LCA was due to their strength, athleticizm and depth. Very winable game for Hazard until the very end.

Just my 2 coins worth....

LCA was up 28-7 at half...Mayfield scored to make it 28-13 then LCA scored to make it 35-13....is a 3 TD's margin considered close? Also, I've always thought the argument is was close for 2, 3, etc quarters to be comical. Isnt football a 4 quarter game? Why is the 4th quarter any different than the 1st quarter? Fatigue is a major factor and many (LCA) teams use that to their advantage.

If I recall correctly, it was 35-19 (still a 2 score game) late the third. I consider that close enough that Mayfield still was in the game. LCA was in control for sure but I have seen much stranger things happen in games, especially with a player like Sheldon who can score at any time from anywhere on the field. My whole point is no one should look at the final score and think Mayfield was not competitive in that game.

I really don't see your reason other then you see the Mayfield's program tradition better then that of Hazrad. Hazard had a real shot at beating LCA 35-28 in the 4 quarter of a winable game losing by 7 points. Then you have Mayfield at best in the 3rd quarter was down 16 points to tie the game at 35-19 and by the forth quarter did not have any chance at a win let alone make it repectable 55-19. I sorry Voice of Reason, Mayfield may have the better record 13-2 and better tradition, but when it matter the most in the playoffs Hazard was the better team.:eyeonyou:

My son played on the LCA line this year. He has his lineman buddies are over to the house once a week to play games in our basement. They all said Hazard hit us the hardest up front of anyone we played this year with Lexington Catholic being a close second.

I think it was said earlier in this thread that one team finishes first, and everyone else finishes 2nd. For every season up until 2009, LCA went home each of those seasons with that 2nd place mindset. Doesn't really matter what the pollsters note in their polls, the reality is there is only one team that finishes first... everyone else is tied for second.

A couple of years ago, perhaps the TWO best baseball teams in the state happened to be from the same district and faced off against each other in the first district game. Only one team advanced, the other team went home. The team that lost that opening district game could have beat every team that made it to the state baseball finals that year. Only one team took home the first place hardware, and another took home the 2nd place hardware that year.

That's the exciting thing about High School sports... On any given night, anything can happen. If there were a best of 7 series played, the better team would surface most of the time (not always).

The only way we'd ever know who was the better team between Hazard and Mayfield would have been if they had played each other in 2009... and that didn't happen. So I'll have to look in the history book to make my decision on who is the second best team in Class-1A for 2009, and there Mayfield sits alone listed as the 2009 runner-up. Everyone else in Class-1A is tied for 3rd... and might as well be listed alphabetically, which puts Hazard way down on the list.

My point is what Mayfield and Hazard each did versus LCA in one game can not be the reason to jump Hazard up to #2. You can't use one game versus a common opponent to decide that. It has nothing to do with tradition. It has to do with the talent on the field this year.

I agree with this. So here are your true final standings in 1A:

1. LCA

2. Mayfield

3. Beechwood, Hazard

5. Bellevue, Crittenden County, Harlan, Raceland

Wow, that is so fair LCA and Hazard are form the east they can't play in the state title game, but because Mayfield was in the championship form the west that makes them a automatic number number 2 in the state when they losed the title game, please. I have to say it if Hazard was in the west we would not even be talking who is number 2. I hate to tell you all this when LCA and Hazard was playing that was the real state title game, who ever would have won, be it LCA at the time would have beaten Mayfield. You know Voice of Reason it is possible that the two best teams in Class A could have came form the East, I mean in high school football that has happen on more then a few times over the years.

I have tons of respect for the East teams. I said LCA was going to win the title this year way back in the summer and touted them as the clear #1 team in 1A all year long. I know Hazard is a strong, tough hard hitting team. The Fugate kid is a beast. But I think Mayfield is the second best team in the state. I think Sheldon and Murrell are right there with Witt, Hayden and Burdette as the best players in 1A and I think the stars win the big games as long as they have a solid surrounding cast, and Mayfield does. If it makes you feel better, I do think Hazard is #3 over Beechwood. We'll just agree to disagree on this one because neither of us is going to change each other's mind.

If you go by body of work, Mayfield is unquestionably #2.

If you go on the basis of one game against a common opponent, Hazard gets the edge.

I'll go with the body of work ... Mayfield was 14-1 and beat two state champions.

Well my friend you right about agreeing to disagree, and I will say Mayfield had a great season at 13-2, but they are still number #3 in my book and Hazard even at 9-5 was at the top of there game when it counted most in the post season. Voice of Reason have a Merry Christmas and a happy New years.:thumb:

Mayfield fared poorly at state, but they beat Beechwood 38-0 the previous week ... I would say that was being on top of their game when it counted.

If not for a good rally against LCA, we are not even having this discussion. Hazard in my book comes in at #4 or #5. One game in HS, where anything can happen on any given night is not much of a case. Hazard's body of work tells us this much. Be glad Hazard made a great showing but stop kidding yourself, Mayfield hands down was better
