What I find ironic in this whole "debate" is that most of the top flight programs don't get on here and make arguments about "well, we were really the 2nd best team."

 

When Boyle lost to Bell by 2 last year, many tried to say the state title was really that game but few Rebel fans made that argument. Why? Because it didn't matter. Whether 2nd or 10th it was short of the goal and a point not worth the effort. If you get to the final, you are worthy of that trophy, plain and simple. :thumb:

Let me make one thing clear to everyone who is posting on this topic. I haven't seen one post on this topic from anyone close to the Hazard program proclaiming ourselves the 2nd rank team behing LCA. First of all, rankings mean nothing!! There is only one Class A Champion and that is LCA. Second place is for losers. So everyone keep proclaiming the point that "we're NO. 2". Who cares. I promise you nobody from Hazard could care less.

Hazard finished theirs quite well by nearly beating the state champion. Mayfield didn't come close.

It sounds to me like we have some very embarrassed fans from the West side of the 1A brackets that are trying to save face; that the results weren't as bad as they were.

 

I can understand. 55-19 & 38-0 are difficult numbers to swallow. But they happened.

 

If not for a good rally against LCA, we are not even having this discussion.

But at least Hazard did make the rally. When it counted, Mayfield did not.

 

My son played on the LCA line this year. He has his lineman buddies are over to the house once a week to play games in our basement. They all said Hazard hit us the hardest up front of anyone we played this year with Lexington Catholic being a close second.

The guys who actually faced both Hazard & Mayfield on the field disagree with the pronouncements from those from the Western bracket.

 

If I recall correctly, it was 35-19 (still a 2 score game) late the third. I consider that close enough that Mayfield still was in the game.

Yes. For 2 minutes & 17 seconds Mayfield closed to within 16 points. LCA quickly marched down the field to extend their lead to 23.

 

I disagree wholeheartedly that 16 points is, practically speaking, within 2 scores. The odds of any team bridging that gap with 2 TDs AND 2 2-point trys are astronomical. Slightly possible, yes; but I wouldn't bet that way, and neither would most on BGP.

My point is what Mayfield and Hazard each did versus LCA in one game can not be the reason to jump Hazard up to #2. You can't use one game versus a common opponent to decide that. It has nothing to do with tradition. It has to do with the talent on the field this year.

LCA & Hazard have been going back & forth over the past 2 years. It's not like either one has totally dominated the other. These 2 teams have been very close in skill level; much closer than LCA/Mayfield -this is based on "experience"; not speculation.

I can buy that somewhat because the recent battles. But LCA this year was totally dominating and the overwhelming favorite to win it all in 1A. Hazard was 9-4 coming into that game including losses to a 7-6 Breathitt County team (who lost to LCA 63-12!!) and a Clay County team that only won 4 games. So regardless of close games the past couple of years, Hazard beating LCA this year would have been a HUGE upset. Come on Bluto...don't sell your Eagles short. Hazard beating LCA this year would have been the biggest upset of the decade in 1A. And if you don't think so, please find me another playoff game this decade you consider more of an upset.
