From what I've heard, SK has a fine freshman class.

You have heard correct. Summit and Twenhofel have had some talented teams the past couple years. They should challenge in the 8th Region over next few years if they all work hard and develop. Steiner is a good coach also so the Pioneers have a bright future.

Pendleton County has a great Freshman class. However their best two freshman, Monroe and Strong, may not play freshman basketball.

Monroe for sure is not playing freshman as he will be starting Varsity. He started last season as an 8th grader. Strong has potential so if they move him up to JV I could possibly see that, especially if he has grown.

What I know from coaching these age groups the past few years is this class should be very good at a lot of NKY schools. From the feeders I would think these teams will be very good. (no reason of order)

CovCath-St Joe's had a very nice team for the past 2 years. They now add a good guard in from St. Pius (Murphy)and some size from Pius. Also the Freshman QB (BIR) who had a good season for the Colonels was from St. Paul. He'll be a nice bball player also.

Brossart-St. Mary's was one of the best 8th grade teams last year. They have good size and could shoot the ball. Not sure if all these boys head to Brossart, but St. Joe's Cold Springs can help with some talent Im sure.

Simon Kenton-As seen in posts above. They have talent. Lots of it. They also have size and should benefit from a really good Summit View team.

Connor-I don't know much about them, cuz I never saw them. But I hear great things and am told the staff at Connor is excited about this group.

Beechwood-Hear alot about this team. Let see if they all stick with BBall.

St. Henry-Will be interesting to see what happens with Meiman. Not many Freshman start out on JV for Faust. But they have a nice group from IHM coming in. And a group from other feeders that have some talent that will keep them competitive.

Size from Pius? I can not recall Pius having a size advantage on anyone last year. Who are the guys you are thinking of. Maybe they have had some growth spurts since I have seen them last.

Isn't that always the question with the Beechwood program? Shumate is working on turning that around though.

Apparently Brossart will lose a couple kids from that St. Mary's team to NCC and Highlands but they pick up Tanner Norton who was at Twenhofel last year.

I am curious where the Frederick boy from Blessed Sacrament is going to school? He has a very nice handle and can score. He's a very small guard but has a lot of upside and at times is tough to stop.

Thought I heard he was going to CovCath. Fredrick's that is.

As to Beechwood and players sticking with basketball, many of the basketball players aren't even playing freshman football. So it looks like this class is going to have some kids totally focused on basketball. Beechwood will have some size with Maus at 6' 4" and McKenzie at 6' 4". Add in a couple more in the 6' 1-2" range and that will be nice size on the front line. If Nussbaum plays freshman ball (vs. JV and varsity), Beechwood's freshman team should be able to hold their own with anyone.

Highlands is pretty thin on the Freshman squad this year. If they allow 8th grader Nick True 6'4 210 to play Frosh it will formulate a very nice lineup. McCoy is a strong lefthander on the block and Turner has improved his game and takes it to the basket strong. Christian will provide great defense and rebounding down low and Witte should blossom this year in the transition game. He has worked hard in the offseason on strength and conditioning. They could go 6'4, 6'0, 6'0, 5'11 and 5'10 respectively with their lineup. That is if Nick True plays Frosh ball and doesnt get moved up to JV.

The two that went to NCC and Highlands are very good athletes, but basketball was not their strongest sport. The 4 best basketball players from the diocesan champions St. Mary's ended up going to BBHS. Most of St. Joe's Cold Springs basketball players went to NCC.

Cov Cath should be good. They got:

All the players from their feeder schools except the best from St Joes. I like others, am not completely sure about Frederick.

The best from St Paul (the Freshman Quarterback)

The point guard from St Henry Elementary.

3 of the top 6 at IHM (the stud running back) and 2 others.

They should be very deep again thus year.

Tough decisions for the coaches

The little lefty?

Yes

Point guard will be a strength for them.

Oh I know, but they are athletic kids that could scrap and rebound so they will be missed. Role players certainly are important.

Agreed, the Robinson kid was a brute! I loved watching him play. I hope he tries out for hoops at Highlands.
