Here's a telling statistic. This thread - entitled "Obamas Fail in personal pitch to bring 2016 Olympics to Chicago" has triple the posts than the General Discussion thread entitled "Rio Awarded 2016 Olympics".

I thought I heard someone say that cities that host the Olympics lose millions of dollars. I'd assume hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions make money, plus existing stadiums or coliseums.

 

But honestly, what is the city of Chicago going to do with a ginormous aquatic center in October of 2016? And what about the other stuff constructed? Sure, it will create temporary jobs but those only help a little bit. Especially when the large venues are only used for a two month period.

 

Seriously, what did Beijing do with an aquatic center made out of one humongous LCD screen?

Yes as someone pointed out it's actually costing cities tons of money to host this. The Chicago mayor in the past week also reneged on his promise to not tax city citizens extra to host this if they were chosen as well. I also don't think Chicago is America's best foot forward. They lead the country in teen murder rate, and just they other day we had to watch over and over as an honor student was beat to death there. I don't want that as our image to the world.

I'd have to search again but I did read where the issue was not with the city of Chicago but, rather, with the US Olympic Committee bashing heads with the IOC over $$.

Someone earlier mentioned that all but one of the proposed event locations are already built and would only require some renovations. I would assume that most cases of other cities losing money would be because they had to construct a lot of new facilities (Athens, for example).
