I still don't understand why. Why does everyone insist on both getting the shirt? It's a bad move, even if they aren't ready to play. You have to create some separation between the two.

 

Common sense says redshirt all frosh who aren't going to make an impact. But this is a unique situation. Most teams do not bring in two quality QB's in one class, most really probably wouldn't want to do that if their situations were right.

 

I think you redshirt Moss, give Newton a few reps here and there, and possibly by next year he could be ready to go IF Hartline doesn't work out. You guys would have redshirted Jacory Harris last year at Miami. He got the kind of reps I'm talking about, and look at what he's doing this year. Granted he is better than either of UK's two frosh, but still.

Not usually in one year. There are exceptions like Michigan this season. But, Michigan needs all the players it can get, and Denard Robinson will most likely end up in another position.

I think one of the two will get some minutes so that one can be reshirted and create some separation. It does a team little good to have two good and highly touted QB's in the same class. I don't see either starting, but I don't think it would be wise to redshirt both.

He lost his job to a wide receiver because he did not have any experience. Mike Hartline has grown by leaps and bounds in the last twelve months. That is not to say he is all-America candidate at quarterback. We all kinow that he is not, but with all the experience he has gotten, he has become adequate.

 

Remember, just a little more than a year ago, Mike Hartline was all set to play a limited role as a backup to Curtis Pulley. He was suddenly thrown into the starting quarterback position and we all saw how ready he was for that role.

Sure they do. In high school the best athlete on most teams is the QB. Spurrier used to bring in 4 or 5 high QBs a year. You're assuming that both of these guys future is at QB, there is no way to know that for sure. How many high school QB's are at UK right now. Hartline, Fidler, Sargant, Cobb, Lentz, Newton, Mossakowski, and those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Sorry I didn't mean to offend Mike Hartline fans. You can't really make an excuse for him losing his job last year. Hartline was an inexperienced QB, Cobb was a true freshman WR who had HS QB experience. No matter what you say about Hartline he should not have lost his job to Cobb.

 

Hartline is adequate, but that doesn't really help UK achieve it's goal of taking the next step, which is what Brooks stresses. He has become a dependable guy at not losing the game, but in the SEC unless you have a tremendous defense that is going to get you to the top. UK has a good defense but lets not confuse anyone other than Lindley and Micah for being an SEC type stud or standout.

 

People compare him to Woodson, I don't see it. Even when Woodson struggled as a youngster you could see flashes of brillance. Hartline never does the spectacular, obviously these frosh are thought to have that kind of talent. That's why a smart team would bring one of them along, get them experience and if they earn the job let them take over sophomore year. It can work in the SEC and has worked.

 

Look at last years crop of QB's. You had no redshirt for J-Harris, Pryor or Robert Griffin. The coaches planned to bring them along slowly, and Pryor and Griffin actually ended up earning their jobs from Seniors. Harris is the best example. Randy Shannon had no plans for starting Jacory last season, but he got him a few series every game. If he played well, he got to play a little more. That is what smart teams do. I believed that is what Carroll was originally going to do with Barkley, but when Corp got hurt Barkley played his way into a job.

Not a Hartline-hater. I don't think he's a great QB, but he has done a nice job so far.

 

As for the bolded, I never do that. It is more often than not though in the college game that the top QB's are really good athletes. They don't have to be, like Bradford has proved.

What worries me about Newton getting reps this year is if Hartline plays reasonably well this year and wins another bowl game it is going to be hard for Newton or Moss to replace him. They would have to be much better to replace a 5th year Senior QB with the resume and experience he will have. I would much prefer to see one of them starting the '11 season as a red-shirt Sophomore. But on the other hand, I don't care who the starter is as long as they give UK the best chance to win.

Hartline had a bad stretch of plays in the UL game in the 3rd quarter. However, other than that, he has looked much better than last year. He will be fine. Last year he looked like a first year starter, but in the bowl game, he showed a nice improvement. Same this year, ... he looks to be developing just fine.
