September 22, 200917 yr Newton, and Mossakowski for that matter, just aren't ready to play or start a game yet and Rich Brooks has said that. You won't see him this year unless Hartline goes down with an injury.
September 22, 200917 yr Fidler is running second team, so he probably will be red-shirted. Along with Mossakowski.
September 22, 200917 yr Yet another player some of the media has build up to be the next coming, but just isn't there. I think it is very unfair to these kids because it looks to the average fan like they are not measuring up when, it fact, there is just a huge difference in high school competition and the SEC competition. A much larger learning curve than you think. No UK fans.....neither Morgan Newton nor Aaron Boyd, nor Ryan Mossakowski, nor Samuel Simpson will be leaving UK early to enter the NFL draft. Redshirting will serve all of these players, well.

It does a team little good to have two good and highly touted QB's in the same class. I don't see either starting, but I don't think it would be wise to redshirt both.

So why did Sargent go in after Fidler against Miami Oh? Why NOT red-shirt both if they are at best 3rd string and against Miami Oh 4th at best? Unfortunately I think one will leave. I hope I am wrong though.

Unfortunately I think one will leave. I hope I am wrong though. I don't know. Please read my post again. It is crazy to redshirt both of them because it leads to what you said. One of them leaving if they are both in the same class. If you give one the 'shirt and let the other one get some experience, you may be able to keep both for their careers. Still a little risky, because most players are not Jarrett Brown and stay around until they finally get a shot as a Senior. I don't know of any legit program that would redshirt both QB's, in the state that UK's QB play is in. But, sure we can redshirt both of them, and one will eventually transfer. It's kind of lucky to get two players of their quality, maybe if UK was USC or UF and consistently got 4 and 5 star talent I could see it, but UK is not a hotbed for recruiting. Why would anyone want both of them to redshirt? It makes ZERO sense. Even if the one that doesn't get redshirted only plays a few snaps at least their is some separation between the players. This is just me, but I think they may be waiting to to see which player will be ready sooner, and they will let that player start to get some reps, and the other will redshirt. Programs of UK's stature cannot afford to waste a player of these two's caliber. I really don't see what's so hard about that, since it's not like high caliber QB's are lining up to play at UK.
September 23, 200917 yr Will we get to see him this year. Hartline did not look that good Saturday. Right now Hartline is #35 in the country in QB efficiency. Aside from 2 plays, Hartline did well. One of them, IMO was Joker's fault. Why on earth run the option with Hartline? Why wasn't Cobb in there? Redshirt them both.
September 23, 200917 yr UK just doesn't know what to do with talent when they have it. One of those two should have played mop up against Miami, Ohio. With Hartline just sort of being the kind of QB that manages the game, who knows maybe sometime next year they will need one of these two. When Newton or Moss get to play meaningful minutes, I hope that they atleast have a little bit of experience. I just don't see the benefit of redshirting both. If they were going to do that they should have picked one and told the other one to look elsewhere.
September 23, 200917 yr Author •Kentucky is flying high entering the bye week after opening the season with a convincing win over Miami (Ohio). Coach Rich Brooks said he won't play freshman quarterback Morgan Newton this season unless he thinks Newton can help the team. http://espn.go.com/blog/sec/post/_/id/2801/lunchtime-links-uphill-battle-for-minority-coaches

September 23, 200917 yr Hartline was 20-27? Threw the winning touchdown pass. What are you talking about? My thoughts exactly. Look, Hartline struggled last year. That was last year. The guy has done a very good job of managing games so far this year, aside from an interception that was just as much Cobb's fault as it was Hartline's, and that fumble on that run. Hartline is just another example of a player who has struggled and still gets no credit.
September 23, 200917 yr Doesn't it always seem like the UK Quarterback struggles then bounces back to be pretty productive? I remember hating the idea of Andre Woodson under center, he was horrible in his first year as a starter. We all know how it turned out from there.

Ryan Mossakowski will not get any minutes or reps this season. His shoulder and arm is not ready nor will it be ready this season. I am sure there is a chance it will never be the same as it was before his surgery. It seems as though Morgan Newton has gotten reps in practice and the coaching staff has determined that he is not ready to play, thus a redshirt looks to be inevitable. Why play him if he is not ready to play? He is not ready to play. Redshirt him. Kentucky is getting ready to begin a stretch of eight SEC games in the next ten weeks. Lots of things can happen in that time at the quarterback position. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

It's a bad move, even if they aren't ready to play. You have to create some separation between the two. Common sense says redshirt all frosh who aren't going to make an impact. But this is a unique situation. Most teams do not bring in two quality QB's in one class, most really probably wouldn't want to do that if their situations were right. I think you redshirt Moss, give Newton a few reps here and there, and possibly by next year he could be ready to go IF Hartline doesn't work out. You guys would have redshirted Jacory Harris last year at Miami. He got the kind of reps I'm talking about, and look at what he's doing this year. Granted he is better than either of UK's two frosh, but still. Red-Shirting both squanders a unique opportunity for UK.
