My feelings are somewhat mixed on this. First off from my point of view, the denomination of the church is not a factor. If you or I chose to accept God in to our lives, and are Baptized as a token of our prior sins being washed away in the eyes of God and others. We can then continue to persue any religious venue we choose. I have never heard of a church Baptizing a person as soon as this, I believe this is a time to be with your family and the people in your life who care about you. As it should be a time for celebration. Should the family of the youth have been notified, I believe so. Was this done with malice, I think not. I'm sure intentions were good. I would be somewhat upset if this were my child and I had not been given the opportunity to help my child with his or her decision. This isn't brain washing, it is the beginning of a life long persuit, of a life style that you choose, or choose not to follow.

I don't believe it was the proper choice for the coach and the others involved, to not include the parents and other family and friends of the youth, in this event. I also believe this should not be blown out of purportion.

I will saw my few words and then shut-up on it so as to not offend. As a youth Pastor, I obviously have strong feelings on this. However, I would rather every 16 year old be in a church, temple, mosque, or any other place of worship than places that most (but not all) 16 year olds end up at these days. Our world would be a better place.

I can understand why she would be upset. As a parent it is my responsibility to share my family's beliefs with my kids. It is my choice to take my kids to church or not. History teachers should teach history, football coaches coach football and let parents do the parenting.

So what happens if your 16 year old doesn't share your beliefs?What if they actually have a mind of their own? Remember the decision was to go to church. Somehow a lot of people have a problem with that.

I couldn't care less what faith (if any) my children practice as long as their hearts are truly in it. That being said, that has nothing to do with the point of my post.

Next thing you know you won't need parents to raise "their own children" the way they feel they should be raised.

 

Now if the young men were 18 go at it coach, but 16? No, you must get permission first from Mom or Dad!

 

BTW no where in the story or from what has been mentioned yet has the Parent been said to be a bad, unfit or uncaring Parent!

:ohbrother: Once again, that is not the issue. I have a huge problem with an adult influencing minors and transporting them to get baptized without any consent from the parents. I also have a problem with the church doing this no questions asked. If my child (minor) came to me, discussed it logically and rationally then I would have no problem with it but the coach completely crossed the line however good his intentions may have been.

At 16 it's not his choice. You see I don't need someone to raise my kids for me.

What don't you seem to understand about the kids being "minors"!

I certainly have conflicting thoughts. Personally, I chose to send my kids to religious private schools, so I obviously have no issue with the teachers and coaches my kids came in contact with were influencing their religious beliefs.

 

But, I don't think I'd have been happy at all if they'd been in public school and the same thing occured.

 

I certainly think that the coach had good intentions. But, I think that maybe it wasn't the best choice of a team building excercise. On the otherhand, I don't see how religion can be detrimental. But then some of the kids got baptized, which is just weird to me.

 

Anyway, I don't think the coach should be fired for this. On the otherhand, what's the record of Breck Co on the field?
