Clyde Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 Is it OK to joke about shooting the President? Can you simply write it off as a joke? Or is this on the list of things you simply don't joke about? I ask because a pol of some sort from Idaho made a joke about buying "tags for Obama" like buying tags for hunting wolves. Thoughts?
Gunner11 Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 Completely inappropriate. I think it is a federal crime. I believe threatening the presidents life is punishable up to 5 years in the clink.
UKMustangFan Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 There is nothing, and I mean nothing, that is out of line for a joke.
halfback20 Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 I can see how it could be taken in the wrong way...but it doesn't bother me.
Birdsfan Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 A lot of things are out of line for a joke, and that is right at the top of the list.
Clyde Posted August 28, 2009 Author Posted August 28, 2009 There is nothing, and I mean nothing, that is out of line for a joke. You'll be shocked but I lean towards all being fair game when it comes to jokes. I may not LIKE the joke but I'm not comfortable saying one group or person is OK for jokes but not others. This would fall into the "I don't LIKE the joke" category.

Maybe, but there are too many idiots that don't have a sense of humor, that will take something like that seriously. When you start joking about it, some fool will think it's OK now to do it. Remember, all John Hinckley needed was to think he was impressing Jodie Foster.
Guest Bluto Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 So, how did you feel about the movie "Death Of A President" (the fictionalized assassination of GWB) http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0853096/#comment "Preexisting footage of President George W. Bush and CGI effects help to create the scenes of his assassination." [please footnote your 'outrage' when this came out.]
cch5432 Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 I think that many, many jokes are incredibly inappropriate, including (but not limited to) those revolving around the death of our country's leader, the President. That being said, everyone absolutely has a constitutional right to those tasteless jokes, and I would argue vigorously in defense of that right. And that being said, I would individually rebuke anyone who made such a joke.

75center Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 I don't like people making jokes about killing any public figure. There's so many nuts out there that it just makes me uncomfortable.

When you start joking about it, some fool will think it's OK now to do it. Remember, all John Hinckley needed was to think he was impressing Jodie Foster. No question that's the downside. However, I've been told by my brothers on the far right that its not the fault of the person saying the words. Its soley the fault of the one doing the deed. Agreed?
Clyde Posted August 28, 2009 Author Posted August 28, 2009 Is it possible that its more of an issue as to WHO makes the joke vs the joke itself? If I'm sitting at the bar with my buddies and make a joke about killing the POTUS is that the same as a political figure making the joke at a public forum?

The finger pointers will be out and about, then. Cause and affect, that's the way of life.
