The Importance of a Pre-Game Speech?

Featured Replies

Was talking with a friend of mine today and he told me that he didn't think a Pre-Game speach from the coach was necessary to "fire up" the team. Coming from a high school where we had VERY motivational pre game speaches, I disagreed with him. I said they were very important because it gets the kids fired up. What do you guys think?

Are they important or do you think it is just a way for the coaches to blow off some steem?:idunno:

It depends on the team. I dont think Meuller or Glaser giving their teams a pep talk does any good because by that time, they know what they have to do.

Pep talks benefit the underdogs more, IMO

No pep talk ever lasts past kick-off...in my opinion.

IMO,if your team is not already "fired-up" at game time, you have not done your job as a coach. Now if it is last minute instructions then thats a different story.

Depends on the coach and the teams personality. Sometimes I've been around coaches that where bad at it and it showed. Sometimes I have been around them that just flat have their guys ready to play. The coach I played for was as good as anybody I've been around although I've heard guys like Yeagle talk and would imagine he could have you ready to go. I didn't play a game my Sr year that I didn't go onto the field crying. Our coach had us ready to kill. We joked after we got out of high school that we probably would have had he asked us too. He was unreal!

Football is an emotional sport, there for I think a good pep talk is very useful.

It gives the coach a chance to show his passion in front of his team.

IMO Lou Holtz was the best.

If you have talent pep talks mean nothing. If you don't they might get you one good series.

You have to address the team before going out, but a "pep" talk doesn't do a lot for me. I like to see action instead of hearing words.

I think there is a lot to be said about someone that can effectively motivate the kids. It does not necessarily have to be someone that yells and screams. But it is always important to get off to a good start as it can be a tone setter for a game.

Perfectly stated. Games are won or lost in practice Monday thru Thursday and in the weight room in the offseason.

I agree. I played for 2 different coaches. One in Steve Hensley that was great at it. He would have you shaking by the time the game kicked off. Then you have the second coach I played for in Randy Borchers who was shaky at best. He just kind of yelled. Nothing emotional at all. Of course that was his first head coaching gig so I bet nerves were a factor in that. I'm sure he's better out at Cooper with a few years under his belt.:thumb:
