September 9, 200917 yr OK, here's how I'm seeing this: Boldin is 29 in a couple weeks. It's been three years since he cracked 100 catches. He's not even had 90 since then. Last 3 yrs: 16g 83-1203 4TD 12g 71-853 9TD 12g 89-1038 11TD Reggie Bush is at best a flex player and more likely an occasional spot starter more often than not in my league (10 teams). For me, he's behind Frank Gore, Lendale White, Leron McClain and perhaps Rashaad Mendenhall. He's basically useless. In Holmes and Marshall, I get two No. 1 receivers who are younger (four years in both cases) and likely to improve, as opposed to Boldin, who is getting on in advanced NFL age and has missed more than a few games to injury (16 in six seasons). Marshall will come back and play just as big (probably bigger) as last year now that he's got a chip on his shoulder and wants to make himself look attractive to potential suitors, and I look for Holmes to have his breakout year, especially since he's going to have to take on a bigger role until Sweed is ready to take over for Ward. The Steelers are challenged in the red zone, and a guy like Holmes will invariably be a choice option now that he's shown he can catch balls in traffic. And, he'll still be returning punts, at least through the first half of the season. Would it be better if I also countered with our kickers thrown in? He has Longwell and I have Nick Folk and Kevin Gould.

Fitzgerald was a rookie in 2004, so excluding that season, I broke down Boldin vs. Fitzgerald from '05 through '08... Overall Fitzgerald - 60 Games, 368 Rec, 5195 Yds (14.1 Avg), 38 TD Boldin - 54 Games, 345 Rec, 4496 Yds (13.0 Avg), 31 TD Per Game Fitzgerald - 6.1 Rec, 86.6 Yds, 0.63 TD Boldin - 6.4 Rec, 83.3 Yds, 0.57 TD So, first off you see that when he's on the field, Boldin's production is nearly equal to Fitzgerald...project the numbers over a 16 game season and he'd have 53 less yards and 1 less TD. But, looking deeper, check out Fitzgerald's numbers when Boldin isn't playing, and vice versa. Fitzgerald (w/out Boldin) - 10 Games, 68 Rec, 1037 Yds (15.3 Avg), 9 TD That's basically 100 yards and a TD every game. Or, over a full season, 109 catches, 1659 yards and 14-15 TD. Boldin (w/out Fitzgerald) - 4 Games, 22 Rec, 267 Yds (12.1 Avg), TD That's about 67 yards and a TD every 4 weeks. Or, over a full season, 88 catches, 1068 yards and 4 TD. That left me with 50 games over the last 4 seasons in which both guys have played and some interesting numbers. '05-08 with both guys playing Fitzgerald - 300 Rec, 4158 Yds (13.9 Avg), 29 TD Boldin - 323 Rec, 4229 Yds (13.1 Avg), 27 TD Per Game Fitzgerald - 6 Rec, 83.2 Yds, 0.58 TD Boldin - 6.5 Rec, 84.6 Yds, 0.54 TD There's virtually no difference in these two guys when both are playing. Yet, Fitzgerald is valued roughly 20 slots higher in fantasy drafts and there are anywhere from 5-10 WR's between them in the rankings depending on which you look at. Worrying about Boldin's health is a valid concern, but know that when he is on the field, he produces elite numbers. But, to me, those numbers make me think that Fitzgerald is being overvalued rather than Boldin being undervalued. Bush was on pace for around 1400 total yards and 9-10 TD. Add the three return TD's and you'd be at 12-13 TD, and it's possible he may have added another one. I think you may be undervaluing Bush when he's healthy. He's not a between the tackles guy, and he doesn't get 25 touches a game, but he can produce. I wouldn't be so quick to deal him, because McClain probably won't duplicate his '08 season and Mendenhall is an unknown. Just something to think about. I wouldn't make that trade.

And I'm just not seeing that with Bush. I think he will have limited effectiveness this year, and be hurt much of the time.

Bush and Boldin have been injury prone the last two years. If you think Holmes is ready to ride that Super Bowl performance and put together a great season, and you're that worried about the other two staying healthy, then I'd go for it. I think Holmes might deliver this year. I really don't know what to make of Brandon Marshall...but, I also think Boldin and Bush will be healthy for the majority of the season, if not all season.

September 9, 200917 yr Why do you think so? I think having a RB in New Orleans will help Bush. They'll be using him the way he needs to be used, rather than having him in the traditional lead back role, which they tried last year and saw the result. As for Boldin, I think he's just been unfortunate with injuries. Sometimes they just happen, but the guy is tough as nails. He got his face smashed last season and was back in 2-3 weeks if I remember correctly. But, ultimately, it's for the same reason I think this year will finally be the year Santonio Holmes delivers...just a guess.
