August 18, 200917 yr My son received a letter regarding the kees money he has earned. The letter starts with......Pending available funds..... I knew kees was in trouble, but heard it was back. Anybody know for sure? Edited August 18, 200917 yr by Beechwoodfan
August 18, 200917 yr I heard there was trouble all 4 years my son was in College, but it was always there. He just graduated in May 09. My wife used to work there, so I will check and see what I can find out. It sure does help out. :thumb:
August 18, 200917 yr We were told by our college advisor that there is a strong push to make KEES money need-based instead of performance-based. If so, then only those that score well AND demonstrate a need would receive it. Nothing like taking away an important motivational tool for the students to take their studies seriously and do well.
August 18, 200917 yr From what I can find out, this year you should be ok Beechwoodfan. Hopefully the program will survive.

As a high school teacher, I'm not sure how many kids are motivated by this. I'm sure that it's a motivating factor for some parents, though!
August 18, 200917 yr Wasn't the KEES money supposed to come from the lottery? I know people haven't stopped gambling, so why is there the threat of doing away with the money?
August 18, 200917 yr These rumors have been rumbling shortly after the program started. Hope it works out for ya, BeechwoodFan!

We've also heard the same thing. I agree with your point on taking away the motivational tool for students. Believe me, the GPA in high school and high ACT scores really help out once the student is in college. You just have to keep the GPA above 3.0 to receive the maximum earned from high school. I don't think KEES should go to needs-based distribution of funds.
August 18, 200917 yr It's still available but when Beshear got in office he cut the funding on it big time in his push for casino's. Part of the slogan "well we can't have this without slot machines"!
August 19, 200917 yr As a high school teacher, I'm not sure how many kids are motivated by this. I'm sure that it's a motivating factor for some parents, though! As a former high school student in Kentucky I never thought about KEES money until I actually got into college. I sure am glad I did well in high school though. It helps out a ton.
August 19, 200917 yr Thankfully, my son doesn't have to worry about the funding. He earned the max, but found out that it wouldn't be awarded if he went to UE. So, he negotiated with UE who gave him the equal amount in addition to his scholarship. All he has to do is meet the requirements for his scholarship and he keeps his award.

August 19, 200917 yr I know NKU has told me several different amounts for my KEES money coming into this year, so I am not sure. I think they got it straightened out, I sure hope so at least.
