Arena Wars: Big Blue Nation puts Rupp on top

Featured Replies

What level do Winning %'s factor in the discussion?

I think UK has something like an 88% winning percentage at Rupp.

Duke has an 82% mark at Cameron.

UNC is something like 87% at Dean Dome.

UL is 83% at Freedom Hall.

KU is 85 % at Phog Allen.

You are dead on. Some of the posters slamming UK's 18% crazies, need to look in the mirror to see their teams 18%.

And where do they come up with this 18% number. Do these freaks actually have a lab and do research that conclude that 18% of UK's fans (and UK fans only) are crazy and obsessed. I mean seriously. They're more obsessed with the UK fanbase than the crazy UK fanbase they hate are obsessed about basketball, and that's saying a lot.

Has absolutely nothing to do with any of that. It comes from a survey done by the Courier-Journal a few years ago of sports fans in the state. When asked who they felt their biggest rival was, 18 percent of Kentucky fans said "Duke," thereby proving 18 percent right off the top were completely nuts. Since I feel as though there are plenty of other insane UK fans who don't think Duke is their No. 1 rival, I have for years put that 18 percent figure as extremely conservative when assessing the percentage of the UK fan base who is loopy as a loon.

There was some poll (Hearald Leader?) that asked who UK's biggest rival was. 18% said Duke.

The haters immediately determind that those 18% were crazy, and "The 18%" were born.

There may be 18 percent of UofL fans who are insane. But they're not anywhere near as vocal as the UK fans. Especially on this board. I don't go to UofL-related boards specifically to avoid those nutjobs.

Maybe if this was redgrasspreps you might have as many crazy UL fans.

Why are they replacing it then?:idunno:
It is not state of the art, UofL has a great deal of scheduling issues with it as it is overbooked, and it is always sold out and could use more seats.

I will say my only event in Rupp was not a basketball game but a concert. So I'm not talking about game experiance as I can't compare the two but I feel like the seating and viewing in Freedom Hall was superior to Rupp, which while big felt very vanilla in most respects I simply didn't feel like it was at all special.

That's my point, why are you so obsessed with UK fans?

I don't know about obsessed -- I don't care that much to become obsessed over them. But the fact remains is I live in Kentucky and am surrounded by UK fans. I have watched the nutso behavior all my life.

Well what's everyone else's excuse?

Simple math says that 18% of a much larger number will give you a much larger group. :thumb:

Plus I do admit that some of the vocal UK fans make it more difficult for the rest of us who cheer for their team, but still live in the real world. But coming from Louisville, my family is split between UK and UL fans. And there are plenty of vocal Cardinal fans as well. Just not as many of them! :D

When was the poll taken? If it was taken in the 90s, I could see how Duke could have been UK's biggest rival for the simple fact that they were the two best teams in that decade, and if neither team didn't care who was going to be the team of the 90s, then why bother playing the game in the first place.

Your post history would indicate otherwise.

That's because it is much smaller. Big, big difference in the nose bleeds in Freedom Hall compared to the ones in Rupp. Top seats in Freedom Hall translates into about the start of the second level at Rupp.

Also big difference in conerts and basketball. I have watched basketball games in both, and when Rupp gets rocking for a basketball game, it is impossible to describe the feeling you get. I'm just in my early twenties, but I can remember my first game at Rupp and it was in the last weeks of the 96' season against Alabama. When the lights went out and when the entrance song (same one that the Bulls got introduced too in the Jordan days) started blasting and as the lineup was announced, I was just hooked. So glad I got the chance to watch the 96' team play in Rupp, what a special bunch.

No, it was in the last few years. I joined BGP in 2004 and it was after that.
