banana slug Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 A conversation came up at a graduation party. With Luke Maile winning Mr. Baseball, an argument can be made that he is the best ever modern day player in the 9th Region. Since the 1980's, who else would you put on a list of best-ever by position? Maile, CCH ©, Curley, BW (3B ?), Elliott BW(OF), Buerger BW(?), Grogan CCH (SS), Farris Boone (OF), Todd Etler CCH (P) Who am I forgetting? Help me fill out the line-up.
katbird Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 SS Hunter Jones (Bellevue).. Rated one of the top 150 players in the country.
BB#21 Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 SS Hunter Jones (Bellevue).. Rated one of the top 150 players in the country. He is rated in the top 100 now.
KY Thorobred Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 I have seen Curley and Etler play on the hilltop and I would gladly take either one of them.
ColonelCrazy Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Todd Etler was a 3rd round pick. He'd get my vote.
ColonelCrazy Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Tim Grogan is the best SS I have seen in the 9th. Brandon Berger, from Beechwood, made it to the bigs. He graduated around '94, I'd guess. Rob Harmon ('02 - CCH) had a very dominant career & won a state championship.
ColonelCrazy Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Larry Luebbers ('87 - St. Henry) is another guy with major league experience. He was drafted in the 8th round in '90. I've never heard much about his HS career, but I'd imagine it was a good one. I know he was a 4 sport athlete.
gametime Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Jelani Brandon has to make the list in the OF. 6th round pick by the Royals out of Lloyd...
TAC Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Frank Jacobs NCC. Played football and Baseball for Notre Dame. Drafted by the Mets.
Voice of Reason Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Since we already have named some big leaguers, let's start by listing players that made it to at least AAA level. Chris Hook, LHP from Lloyd, played in the majors. Jim Bunning? Leo Foster? Or is that too far in the past? Also, what is considered "modern day" players? Since 1960?

How long ago do you think it was that Leo Foster played at Holmes, to be called too far in the past? BTW the biggest difference IMO between the players of today and those in the past (other than aluminum bats) are the field conditions the players play on today compared to what they played on years ago. The worst baseball fields today that the HS play on would be considered outstanding back in the day.
banana slug Posted August 11, 2009 Author Posted August 11, 2009 I agree Ole' guy. I put "since the 1980's" in the original post for that reason; however, it is interesting to see some of the old names like Leo Foster.
2Short Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Jim Cutter from Newport was awefully good if I remember correctly...I think he got hurt and never really got back to 100%?

I overlooked the "1980's" comment in your original post. I still say if you want to judge the best ever modern day player, let's start with guys who made it to AAA or higher and see how many we come up with. Mr. Baseball is awesome and definitely great recognition. Maile earned it on the field with great play for 3 years. It also is a somewhat subjective achievement. I would rather rely on less subjective accomplishments to say who is the best. Maile may make it to the majors some day, but for now he has not actually achieved as much in baseball as several others already mentioned above.
