stick1 Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I usually stay out of the P+R forum debates however I enjoy reading them and it is usually educational. I've had a few things on my mind and would like to here your thoughts. I have lived in different parts of the state and taught school for 7 years before taking the pharmaceutical sales job I have had for 3 years now. I've been able to be around a lot of different folks in different areas. This has helped me form my opinions....here goes! What the heck has happened to this great country? I think when it comes to rolling up our sleeves like 9-11 there is still a lot of patriotic people that would take care of their neighbor but it seems like we are going downhill fast. I grew up in Eastern KY...left for college and moved back about 13 years later. I taught school so I wasn't out and about all day. This sales job helped me realize just how many people live off of the people that work. We now live in a country that rewards the lazy people while punishing the hard working people. I was at 2 different Walmarts the other day (1st of the month) and wanted to puke as there were welfare folks all around me with carts overfilled with food I couldn't provide for my kids even with a good job. I coach ball and here kids say I'm living off the government after school. It's great! My family does it. We eat great and can hang out all day long + watch T.V. My thoughts on that one is that you should have to serve at the very least 5 years in the military if you aren't going to get a job and live off the government. Welfare is being abused but nothing is done about it. Disability is the same way. I know a lot of people I went to school with that abuse it. I know a lot of people need it (that's not who I'm talking about) but the majority I know abuse the system. The next thing that irks me is education. All the politicians put it at the top of the list yet more and more schools find themselves with 1. less money 2. less staff 3. less programs 4. less resources. How can you cut all that and expect to get better? Why not build more schools? That is more jobs for teachers (good for the economy). It's also smaller class sizes which leads to more quality of education! The programs being cut out are also hurting the kids not helping. Now I get to crime. I've had guys I went to high school with and guys I went to college with that got busted trafficing drugs from Fla to KY. You can walk in the Dr's office and know who is giving all the pain pills away. Yet some of those guys only got house arrest! One MIGHT get 2-3 years! The jails are overcrowded. Why not build more jails? That means there will be more good jobs (good for the economy). It also means the crooks are off the streets. With that probably means that a large majority of the people that are collecting the working mans check by sitting at home are now behind bars! If that is the case then those folks that sit around all day eating like a champ are now on a diciplined diet behind bars which means the obesity goes down. This in turn is good for healthcare. Is this a little in your face...yeh. It is how I feel though! I understand the money has to come from somewhere...maybe some of you have ideas there. I know some folks need the welfare and I know some need the disability. I also know a huge majority of people on it first hand that are just flat lazy. I don't like talking to kids getting ready to go out into the world about their plans and them feel like they are good with just getting a free pass the rest of their lives. Some of it stems from my mom and dad I suppose. They are both retired (mom a teacher and dad an electrician from a power plant). Mom is going to make less this year from her retirement check then she did last year because Frankfort screwed up. Dad works more now then he did when he retired because he can't afford not too. My older sister had triplets that are 12 now. She and her husband both teach school. With the pay they make can you imagine what kind of money they have after groceries etc? About 1/2 what the money these people sitting around get. Same thing with kids in college. Go to college...pay a fortune...get a job and pay on your loans for a long long time. I'm not even going to get started on the frivolous (sp) lawsuites! Ahhh that felt good to get off the chest! Fire away....
stick1 Posted August 6, 2009 Author Posted August 6, 2009 One more thing... random drug test every person on welfare. It is abused for pills too! A cut of their welfare pays for the test. If they fail the test then they come up with the money to pay for it!
justme2018 Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009  Everything I have wanted to say for the longest time. As you know we work in the same field, and even have the same areas. It simply amazes me some of the offices I go and the stuff I see.

FC Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I agree with 99.9% of everything you said. People need to get off their butts and take responsibility for their lives and the lives of their children. Quit milking the system and blaming everyone and everything for their hardships. Like you, I’ve worked all my life and have made a decent life for myself and my family and it really irks me when I see my tax dollars funding other peoples laziness. The only thing I don’t 100% agree with is forcing non-volunteers into the military. The reason is that the military structure, discipline, and moral suffer under a non-voluntary force. I say put them to work on infrastructure or community projects (jails, schools, roads).

The thing I like like about the military option, is that maybe it would motivate them to work in school and at jobs so they could stay out of the military. If someone doesn't want to be in the military then go out and get a job.

If someone doesn't want to be in the military then go out and get a job. yeah but FC is right, the last thing we need is a military manned by any group of people that don't want to be there and will not be responsible in the crucible of pressure. Hitler had an army full of those at the end of WW II and we saw how that went.
FC Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I suspect that many of the Vietnam Veterans might also attest to the moral, drug, authority, and desertion problems that occurred in a non-volunteer force. Every time the topic of a draft has come up since 9/11 the military leadership has been against it. They know, many from Vietnam that an all volunteer force is much more discipline and motivated then people who don’t want to be in the service.
hoopboy Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I agree with you wholeheartedly. And one more thing, if some druggie was trying to come in on me with masks with the intention to rob and maybe shoot me, if I sent them to their graves, I'd bet the farm they'd find room in their overcrowded jail cells for me, but would do nothing for the druggies if they got away with my loot.

I do think there is a difference between a draft and telling people if they want a check from the government then join the service otherwise go get a job. They would be forced to make a choice, not forced to join the military. The difference may be subtle, but there is a difference. Prior to welfare becoming so predominant, there were a great deal of people who chose the military option that didn't necessarily want to be there, but felt it was their best option.
stick1 Posted August 6, 2009 Author Posted August 6, 2009 I thought about the moral of putting them in the military and it's definatly something to think about but on the flip side it's the military. There is a good chance some of these people that decide at a young age will be forced to learn some dicipline and hard work. If they are going to be a head case then they will be cracked down on hard instead of all the codelling (sp?) we give now days. If you are going to be a problem in the military then you will be given the worst jobs and put on the front line. You think some people will think twice about floating by off the government? You think they are going to be a headcase while they are in there?

They would likely get more of us killed then the enemy. Other than that one issue, I agree with all your points. I say put them to work in the fields or on the roads. Make them bail hay for 8 hours a day and see how much energy they have to cause trouble at night.

Make them bail hay for 8 hours a day and see how much energy they have to cause trouble at night. That's a legit worry. I just think a structured environment would be good for them. Part of the hope in being proactive with them is that they would learn dicipline and hard work in the military. On top of that they might be a little more reluctant to buck the American system if they had worked hard for it for 5-10 years. Maybe not?

If someone comes into my house with a mask on, other than on Halloween , you can bet I'm taking the "shoot first, ask questions later" approach.
