August 7, 200917 yr A quality rant for sure. Our society is comprised of those who provide net resources (taxpayers) and those who consume net resources (welfare recipients, etc. etc). I have no problem providing resources that enable our great nation to provide a safety net for those less fortunate. The problem, however, is that our safety net has become so bloated and comfortable that an enormous percentage of resource consumers now have no motivation to change their stations in life. It's analogous to what we see going on in prisons these days. Prisoners have cable tv, legal libraries, recreational activites, 3 hot meals a day, and so on. When you provide such comfort to those who don't provide for themselves, you will ultimately create a class of people who have absolutely no motivation to alter the ways in which they conduct their lives. Simply put, we have created a content class of malcontents who have no motivation whatsover to change.................................ever.

Very well put!:thumb: I agree with a safety net especially for the hard working blue collar people that are losing their jobs they want to be in because of our economy right now. The problem is the system needs cleaned up bad! It is flat out being abused something awful. Schools: We haven't talked about them much but a Dr. I was calling on today brought it up in conversation today and I ranted to him a little:lol: He moved to Eastern KY from another country and has 1 daughter at Emory law school with his youngest starting at UK. He was talking about how much the daughter at Emory was behind until she went to a bigtime private school in Mass. There her class size was 6 to a class and her grades totally turned around. He was also talking about how in his old country education was everything. He said you could be the richest person in town but if you had no education then you weren't respected. If you had little money and an education you were much more respected. Schools not for everybody but we can't have better schools by taking the steps we are taking. I used to teach. I was able to teach at the #1 ranked school in the state, a school with a lot of inner city kids and grew up in a very povern stricken area. It was great because I saw all walks of life. The sad thing was especially while I was in Lexington the absolute lack of fear of authority was out of control. Kids cussing teachers every day only to be backed by parents etc. Lots of bullying that was tough to control especially with middle school girls. People with their hands tied because they had to worry about law suites if they hurt feelings. Our schools go right in line having to spend 80% of our time catering to 20% of the kids that cause all the trouble. We can't keep cutting classes, funds, programs, teachers, schools and expectations then expect our schools to get stronger!

Kids should have a certain amount of fear of authority, and teachers are authority figures.

I get a bit of a chuckle whenever I hear people claim that our public education system needs to be "overhauled" when in fact it is many of the parents/families of our schools' children that need to be overhauled. I think it would be interesting to have a thread topic devoted to what teachers have to face on a daily basis in public schools.

I still remember the fear of getting wacked by my shop teacher who custom made the scariest paddles in town.

A lot of schools have went to having security to where the teachers don't even have to deal with the problem kids. Security will come in and scoop them up. That way the teacher will never have to leave the willing to learn students to paddle or discipline the kids. I agree the kids are not as afraid of authority as the days I was in school. I agree something has to be done.
August 7, 200917 yr I usually stay out of the P+R forum debates however I enjoy reading them and it is usually educational. I've had a few things on my mind and would like to here your thoughts. I have lived in different parts of the state and taught school for 7 years before taking the pharmaceutical sales job I have had for 3 years now. I've been able to be around a lot of different folks in different areas. This has helped me form my opinions....here goes! What the heck has happened to this great country? I think when it comes to rolling up our sleeves like 9-11 there is still a lot of patriotic people that would take care of their neighbor but it seems like we are going downhill fast. I grew up in Eastern KY...left for college and moved back about 13 years later. I taught school so I wasn't out and about all day. This sales job helped me realize just how many people live off of the people that work. We now live in a country that rewards the lazy people while punishing the hard working people. I was at 2 different Walmarts the other day (1st of the month) and wanted to puke as there were welfare folks all around me with carts overfilled with food I couldn't provide for my kids even with a good job. I coach ball and here kids say I'm living off the government after school. It's great! My family does it. We eat great and can hang out all day long + watch T.V. My thoughts on that one is that you should have to serve at the very least 5 years in the military if you aren't going to get a job and live off the government. Welfare is being abused but nothing is done about it. Disability is the same way. I know a lot of people I went to school with that abuse it. I know a lot of people need it (that's not who I'm talking about) but the majority I know abuse the system. The next thing that irks me is education. All the politicians put it at the top of the list yet more and more schools find themselves with 1. less money 2. less staff 3. less programs 4. less resources. How can you cut all that and expect to get better? Why not build more schools? That is more jobs for teachers (good for the economy). It's also smaller class sizes which leads to more quality of education! The programs being cut out are also hurting the kids not helping. Now I get to crime. I've had guys I went to high school with and guys I went to college with that got busted trafficing drugs from Fla to KY. You can walk in the Dr's office and know who is giving all the pain pills away. Yet some of those guys only got house arrest! One MIGHT get 2-3 years! The jails are overcrowded. Why not build more jails? That means there will be more good jobs (good for the economy). It also means the crooks are off the streets. With that probably means that a large majority of the people that are collecting the working mans check by sitting at home are now behind bars! If that is the case then those folks that sit around all day eating like a champ are now on a diciplined diet behind bars which means the obesity goes down. This in turn is good for healthcare. Is this a little in your face...yeh. It is how I feel though! I understand the money has to come from somewhere...maybe some of you have ideas there. I know some folks need the welfare and I know some need the disability. I also know a huge majority of people on it first hand that are just flat lazy. I don't like talking to kids getting ready to go out into the world about their plans and them feel like they are good with just getting a free pass the rest of their lives. Some of it stems from my mom and dad I suppose. They are both retired (mom a teacher and dad an electrician from a power plant). Mom is going to make less this year from her retirement check then she did last year because Frankfort screwed up. Dad works more now then he did when he retired because he can't afford not too. My older sister had triplets that are 12 now. She and her husband both teach school. With the pay they make can you imagine what kind of money they have after groceries etc? About 1/2 what the money these people sitting around get. Same thing with kids in college. Go to college...pay a fortune...get a job and pay on your loans for a long long time. I'm not even going to get started on the frivolous (sp) lawsuites! Ahhh that felt good to get off the chest! Fire away.... Stick, where do I start with this. When you say what has happened to this great country do you really have to ask?? Look I love this country more than the next man and or woman but some things that are going on in this country have been brewing for a very long time. To understand what is going on in anything now you have to look at the past. This country was first occupied by the Native Americans. The Native Americans were killed and had their land taken away from the Europeans. Now since I am not a Native American right along with the majority on this site that means us. The Europeans (or us or better yet lets just say our ancestors) also brought along diseases that wiped out a lot of the Native Americans. Now for a person who posted somewhere on this site about sending the foreigners (I'm assuming Mexicans) home or busing them back from where they came from has some kind of nerve because the majority of the people here in the U.S. were and are not of the Native dissent so I guess we all would have to leave right??? Now once the land was taken away by the Europeans the Europeans here started to make money off the land right, right stick?? I bet it would be hard to find deeds to the land that a lot of people have made a lot of wealth off of stick. When I say the deed, I mean, you know, how much did they pay for the land. Did that happen or was the land taken?? I will go with the latter. Do you still ask what has happened to our great country?? So where does that fit under stealing or is that a form of welfare??? Lets don't forget about slavery. Yeah I know that a lot of you all are probably saying get over it already but once again a lot of wealth has been made without having to shell out wages. Yes these people and companies are still big to this day because of this form of, well can we call it welfare?? I mean people were getting very rich without having to work and pay out wages?? You ask what has happened to our great country??? I'm still trying to figure how people in this country could act and carry out torture on people just because of the color of their skin. The lynchings, burning, bombings, dogs, water, yeah stick all this happened in this great country. You also talked about crime and talked about friends of yours only getting house arrest for trafficking drugs in. Not in the black community they get jail time for the same crime or charges, I bet your friends were white weren't they. So we can't even be equal in the sentences we hand out for the same crimes. You know what lets just legalize all the drugs, and tax them like we do alcohol. Then have the same ramifications legally we have if you get caught drinking and driving, public intoxication etc. You all don't think that it's a form of socialism to where you are told what you can and can't do with your own body outside of hurting someone else. Amazing isn't it. Especially when the haves are the ones profiting from this drug industry and the street dealers get the time. I mean last time I checked cocaine isn't grown here in the U.S. Has anybody ever wondered how this drug is getting into our country in the first place. Someone in that big White House has been turning a blind eye and deaf ear for a very, very, very long time. You know Ronald's war on drugs, by the way, let in more drugs than ever in this country. Just ask old Ollie North about that. This great country, Stick?? Education, well that is a no brainer. This is still with the haves and have nots. The people with the money have the better education. You cried about how education should be on the same level or when you talked to your foreigner friend what did he say. Now you said he was European and there is a health care system over there and a lot of how do we say it, socialists views. Their education system is very affordable do to this. Their gas prices have been high for a very long time and they don't complain because well once again they have socialists views. I mean the President is trying to push for things that will kick this welfare habit, better education to all to where they can be more productive later on in the future. But he also has to take care of the problem at hand now!! You guys won't let him. Heck people are already talking about revolutions and stuff. Why because of the fear of a black man in the White House. I mean some people are dogging him and comparing him to the likes of other presidents but noone talked with fear of them or talked about a revolution. I wonder why that is Stick??? Rebelling against our Commander in Chief. You right what has happened to our country.??? So there it is Stick, I'm just ranting like you but the difference is that I know what is going on and why. Lets be real here. This country, which I love, hasn't always been the perfect model that we make it out to be. We have our skeletons,in and out, just as well as any other country. You know the Bible says that you will reap what you sow. Maybe the is what is going on in our great country, maybe this is God's doing and not Obama's or anybody elses. So we will just have to ride this storm. Come together, and help each other, yeah that is what a great country is supposed to do.
August 8, 200917 yr My roommate and I were talking about just this topic the other day. He said that his cousin was actually up for a promotion and chose to decline it because it meant she's lose her food stamps. We both felt that her line of thinking was just sad. I mean where's the self respect in that, a little pride in ones self seems to be what alot of these folks are missing. Only thinking about the here and now, rather than planning for the future and working harder to get that next promotion. People disgust me on a regular basis.

I do agree with the coming together part. I think Bush and Obama have both been bad. Don't really care what color their skin is. I keep hearing about how politicians are doing such and such to get eletcted again. I'll be honest...I'm waiting for the guy that has a set to come in and say look we have turned into a soft country. We all know the problems...I'm tired of hearing about the problems...let's start looking at solutions that reward the Americans that work hard. If you decide to be a lazy bum then you will be treated like a lazy bumb! Doesn't matter what color your skin is! We have turned into such a politically correct society that is afraid to step on each others toes that it's pathetic! We have a group of blue collar folks that would love to work but can't keep their job but we have another group of lazy folks that would rather sit back and collect their check each month because they can sleep in and watch Oprah....Scoutschoice! I am with you on the Coke! It's coming from somewhere. Unfortuantly we have a government right now that wants to give healthcare to illegal aliens that haven't paid a penny to get it...that money comes from the hard working people! I'm with you 100% on the Indians. They got the shaft! They have the casinos now which has been a break but doesn't take back what happened to them. In the end I am sick and tired of watching our Country go downhill. Has there been problems in the past...no doubt! Is it worse now than it ever has been...no doubt (other than the great depression)! There are a lot of great things but we are raising a society that demands instant gradification. The kids are being raised as "the trophy generation" where nobody should get their feelings hurt of have adversity. Maybe it's because I grew up in such a blue collar town I don't know. I do know I'm tired of the finger pointing...tired of this place being soft...tired of us knowing the problems but not being able to do the obvious things to help solve the problems. I am proud to be an American. My dad and both grandfathers faught for this country and I appreciate them along with all the guys/gals fighting for us now. I just hate that we are lowering our standards and expectaions....Scoutschoice! I don't remember any robbery's in my town growing up. It's a small town. Last week the electric went out for about 5 hours. In that span 2 pharmacy's got robbed and several houses. I'll be honest...I believe in an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. If a few people have to be made an example of then so be it but I'm tired of the soft society! I worry really bad about what my kids are going to have to deal with when they grow up. I guess I've backslid some from my religion because I know it's all in God's hands.
August 8, 200917 yr My wife is a teacher. Yes, I agree. But they always turn into teacher bashing threads.

August 8, 200917 yr If someone comes into my house with a mask on, other than on Halloween , you can bet I'm taking the "shoot first, ask questions later" approach. :thumb: As our friend RTS says, I'd rather explain myself to 12 than to be carried by 6.

August 8, 200917 yr Author The friends that got in trouble were white but it's a case by case thing IMO. Dontae Stallworth just went and killed somebody straight up then paid his way out of trouble...he's black so I'm not buying the race card. Do you work or live off the people that work?

Agree with what you say, and actually I don't feel any better after reading it, only more frustrated. However, nothing is going to change because the current President wants to, and is, giving more of your hard earned money to those that are sitting around doing nothing. Until you get Robin Hood out of the big White house, you will continue to give your hard earned money to those that don't need it. Gone are the days free enterprise and working hard to build individual wealth. Now you just work hard so you can give your money to those that don't have so we can all be equal.
