I Bought American

And what a freakin mistake that was. Against my better judgement my wife and I bought a new Dodge Avenger. Traded in a clunker, got a great deal. Right now our new American made "Detroit Iron" is sitting in the dealership's service dept. After leaking oil all over my driveway this weekend, I call the dealership this morning and tell them I have a problem. Gotta love the 1st question, sevice dude asks me about how much oil leaked? WHAT? I guess just a small leak is acceptable for an American car. Next I am told, I must leave the car, and it may be a couple of days before they can look at it! WHAT?? I inquire about a loaner. I'm asked, did you buy the extra extended warranty? My answer is no. I thought 1200+ plus was a little excessive. OK. Even though your vehicle is brand new, we will not give you a loaner for the "couple" of days. OK. My head is about to pop off my shoulders at this point. I do eventually get them to let me drop it off at the local dealer (2 miles from my house) than where I purchased ( 30 miles from my house). Take it down to the dealership, service dude says they might be able too look at it tomorrow. After explaining sort of forcefully, that I found this to be unacceptable, guess what? They all of a sudden find time to get it up on the rack right away while I wait. Could just be a bad fitting, or filter isn't on right. Could be fixed immediatlely if its something minor. So we have now gone from a couple of days to we could be driving out in a couple of minutes. Things are looking brighter. Oops not so fast. Service dude tells me there seems to be "hole" in a cylinder. WHAT!! Could have been a maufacturing issue. Service dude needs to call manufacturer to see what needs to be done. How about a loaner now? NO! But we can give you a ride. WHAT?? Taking my state of mind into consideration, I decline the ride and walk home!! Phone just rings at home, and am told need basically new engine. WHAT?? I have bought 4 new vehicles in my life, and have always bought Japanese. Never a problem. I am kicking myself for thinking an American made car is worth the tires it rides on. Never again!!

FWIW, the Mitsubishi Raider, Toyota Camry, Toyota Sequoia, Honda Oddyssey, Toyota Avalon, Toyota Venza, Toyota Tundra, and Toyota Siena have equal or more of their parts made in the United States then the Dodge Avenger. I'm not sure if those car are equivalent to the Avenger, but I know that the idea of "buy American" often results in the consumer paying more for a car with equal or less quality, as well as lining the pockets of the incompetent American auto executives (who, rather than adapt to market standards, have needed a taxpayer-subsidized bailout) rather than the average American worker.

And 90% of that 73% are probably Canadian. A few years back, Toyotas had more US made parts than the American auto manufacturers.

As for your post, that sucks man. I bought a Jeep years ago that I had nothing but problems with as soon as I pulled it off the lot, brand new. I swore I'd never own a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicle again. I've learned the hard way, and now when you roll by my house, you'll see 3 Toyotas in the driveway.

When did you get it? Can't you take it back for a working model?

You have 3 working days to return a purchase. Have already looked into the lemon law. They have 4 shots to fix it, or if the vehicle is out of service for 30 days in the 1st year, you get a replacement of your money back.

You should have bought a Ford or GM, Dodge on average sucks.

Should have bought a Toyota or Honda. Have also owned GM and Ford that sucked.. 99 Windstar, 84 Chev Celebrity.

Chev went through 3 transmissions in a year and a half. Was told it was a design flaw. Nice.

I bought a Saturn around 3 years ago, and I've never had 1 single problem with it. I love it. I have never owned a Dodge.

Saturn? Heard they're closing up. I have heard good things. Wonder what set them apart from the Ford, GM, or Chrysler?

I have never owned anything but domestic automobiles. That said, I don't think I will ever own aonther Chrysler product unless it is given to me. Other than normal maintenance and wear and tear items, Ive never had any issues other than with the Dodge.
