July 31, 200917 yr No it hasn't. Who were they going to get w/ that money? Who is coming to Cincinanti for a big contract? Their best option was Dunn and he wasn't staying or coming back. I agree that it's a terrible contract, but I don't think there was anyone dying to come here.Bobby Abreu signed late with the Angels for one year and $5 million. They could have made a deal for a mid-priced player or two. Flexibility would have given the Reds some options.

Abreu went to a team that has a chance at the World Series. I'm glad they didn't give him $5M a year. This wasn't the best year to have flexibilty. If you're really good you're either being overpaid by a bad team or overpaid by a good team. Why go to Cincy?
July 31, 200917 yr Cordero did....Who's to say someone else wouldn't That's the issue. They have to so grossly overpay someone to come here that it isn't worht it. Why go to the Reds unless they give you way more than you could get elsewhere?

The Brewers offer was very similar to the Reds offer if I remember correctly. Cincinnati offered more years and a little more money. Players today go where they'll get paid. If they had 12 million extra to spend this offseason they could have addressed needs better.

Why go to Cincy?Abreu didn't sign until February 11 ... who is to say the Reds couldn't have gotten him in January? I think that Jocketty dropped the ball on the outfield picture in the offseason, but there is no doubt that the Reds have some financial constraints that aren't helped by a couple of questionable contracts.
July 31, 200917 yr Tonight's lineup: Drew Sutton lf Adam Rosales 3b Joey Votto 1b Brandon Phillips 2b Jonny Gomes rf Laynce Nix cf Alex Gonzalez ss Ryan Hanigan c Justin Lehr p
July 31, 200917 yr Dusty has said Scott Rolen will hit 5th. He's expected to get here tomorrow. Why not put Phillips @ 2, Votto @ 3 & Rolen @ 4?
July 31, 200917 yr Correct... Wow. Hairston's versatility will be missed. He'd be a great utility guy on a good team. Not sure I like Roenicke being gone. He had closer potential.
