I'm saying that so far he is making some bad decisions too.

 

And also Lincoln and EE were signed to two year deals before this season I believe. That would mean it was Walt who made those decisions. That along w/ Taveras IMO could lead someone to believe he's made a few bad ones.

Did he sign a closer for 12 million a year? How about a #4 pitcher, at best, for 12 million? It's hard to do a lot with your hands tied.

 

Willy T was a bad decision, but 4 million wasted is better than 12. Edwin was an Arby player so his signing just avoided that. He was going to get his money either way. Lincoln was questionable. His he had a solid season last year....His ERA was inflated due to 5 or 6 very rough outings...other than those he was outstanding

You're the king of saying a guy would be really good if it wasn't for a few bad outings. Do those outings not count? You say the same thing about Harang. What if we throw out their best 4 appearances? Then how bad do their numbers look? I'm a big picture guy. Not just when they are going well.

 

The closer isn't the problem, in fact he's been great. EE didn't have to get a two year deal did he? Is that something new I didn't hear about? What about the decision he or Dusty or both reached to bring McDonald north instead of Gomes? Arthur Rhodes looks like a decent deal right now, but he's here next year too if he's not traded so we shall see. Jocketty hasn't done a lot of good things so far for the Reds. I think he can be good, but he hasn't been yet for the Reds.

I will say this though. You're right he didn't inherit the best situation ever. Until MLB has some sort of salary cap the best we as Reds fans can hope for is a crazy streak of luck as far as drafting, good trades, and health to even try to compete for a couple years in a row. Then hope they can do it again a few years later.

Walt doesn't have a lot to work with....having 35 million dollars tied up in three players really puts a hurting on your abilities to get quality players. Especially when two of the three have 4.5+ ERA's. And having 12 million tied up in a closer is stupid. Poor decisions by previous managment will hurt the Reds for a few more years.

Some of us tried to tell you it was fool's gold. So now I have to ask you guys that talked about the Red's having such a good staff. Do you still feel the same way? I caught a similar bad time when I said that Hernandez, Gonzalez and Tavares weren't going to get it done. But hey, what do I know?

2. Harang is getting worse and worse, but its a lot different for relievers....a few bad outings can really inflate their ERA. Starters are a little different. Lincoln didn't give up a run in July of last year. He was lights out the majority of the year.

3. Coco isn't the problem....his 12 million dollar salary is. You simply can not have that much money tied up in the closer if you're Cincinnati. David Weathers did a fine job in that role a few years ago

I don't think I ever 'touted' Arroyo or Owings. I've been a supporter of Harang, but he's lost it. He simply can not get away with working at 88 or 89. He won't be the same unless he gets his velocity back up around 93 on a regular basis. Hernandez has done more than his fair share. Filling in for Votto was huge. I don't think anyone expected him to come in and hit .320 with 20 HR's. He was a solid addition IMO. Personally I liked the Tavares move a the time...not so much now. I've been saying for years that the Reds need to find a SS. They haven't been any good since Larkin retired and won't be until they can find a quality SS to play everyday.

Encarnacion hasn't been bad at all since he came back from the wrist injury. It's hard to hold April and May against him because he was trying to play through it.

Not me. Before the season I posted that Cueto and Volquez were the #1 and #2. I never once thought Owings would do much besides have an arm attached to his body that the Reds could use every 5th game.

Yes, it has ... paying $12 million to a closer takes away a lot off financial flexibility when it comes to addressing questions at other positions.

It's a pain for both teams and players to have to go through. He was signed for market value. He's hitting like .280 since coming back from the DL. IMO, they should see if he can handle LF. That'd take care of the Right handed hitting LF everybody's been talking about.
