June 24, 200917 yr I agree he does not belong in the Hall, mainly because he just sucked at everything baseball related besides hitting irrelevant HRs. I could care less about the steroids. He was a poor fielder, would only swing for the fences, and led the league in strikeouts consistently. A lot of home runs do not equal hall of fame in my book. If we are taking steroids in to consideration, you can say Sosa's entire career was a reflection of steroid use, because the only thing he could do was participate in HR derbies every day. Bonds was a feared hitter for more reasons than just hitting it deep, a great base runner, terrific fielder, etc.

June 24, 200917 yr I agree bugatti...I would also like to add that if anyone feels players linked to steriods should be kept out of the HOF because they cheated then any player who used a corked bat or doctored a ball or used amphetamines should be kept out as well.

June 24, 200917 yr Sosa would have gotten in the Hall of Fame because of his numbers, but I've never seen him as a Hall of Fame caliber player, for some of the same reasons that bugatti advocated. Sammy played 17 seasons in the major leagues, and only about five of them were Hall of Fame worthy.

You hear it every time someone reaches 500 homeruns. "500 homeruns equals a lock into the HOF" That is one of the more dumbfounding statements I've ever heard. Why should the total of one category be enough to get you into the HOF? 300 wins is more than just one category, it shows durability and effectiveness for the pitcher. 3000 hits shows good plate awareness, and discipline, and ability as a hitter. To me hitting 500 homeruns should not be cause for a "guarantee" into the HOF. Sosa is a prime example, as others have stated he was a very poor fielder, was like McGuire in hitting homeruns but also striking out a lot. He wasn't good for his entire 17 years in the major leagues, etc. I just don't agree with the whole perception of what 500 homeruns mean unless you take into account what they've done over the course of their entire career.
