James called AAU and explained the break up between them and the team they joined with. I forget their name. They participated in the state with them, then broke up. AAU gave them an at large bid.

AAU has extended "at large" bids in every age division. I just got that email this morning, again!

In 14U I know that Madison Co. and River City will be attending nationals and I assume that KYElite and TheVille will be there also. I'm not sure of any others in that age group planning on attending. Orlando is a blast but the expense and travel is an obstacle no doubt. Makes Memphis last year look like a piece of cake.:lol:

 

Scott County is planning on going D2. From what I understand, The Ville are not going because they have too many football players who will be started with practice when nationals occurs in August.

In Kentucky, high school coaches still exercise plenty of control over summer basketball. AAU programs don't have quite the same pull.

Oh I agree with you. Anyone who thinks AAU is a joke really doesn't know a lot about AAU. The experience you can get from playing at a high level is unbelieveable. I believe the people that say "It's a joke" probably had a bad experience with a coach or an organization. AAU offers kids the an oppourtunity that playing for your school team in the summer can never give you. You will not see many school teams with 4 and 5 D1 players on them. You will playing AAU.

Still recovering. Original hope was to have his cast off early June, but the doctor has him in the cast an additional month and he will be re-evaluated early July. If all goes well at that checkup, he would have a little more than 3 weeks to get ready for nationals. Still sad that a dirty play caused the kid to lose his summer.

That's fine ... it's always been that way in Indiana.

It's my opinion that you are way off base. Sour grapes is what I'm hearing. I may be wrong.

AAU was great at one time, it made me a better player and I met a lot of people that I am still friends with, not to mention the good times and stories we have from the trips.

 

 

To me though there is just to much bad to go along with it now.

Well, I think that you only hear about the bad. As far as your 80/20 analogy, I think that the overwhelming majority of AAU coaches are in it for the right reasons. Sure there are bad apples. That goes without saying. But to throw the whole lot of AAU coaches under the bus is laughable, considering that you discount all of the coaches that start from the year kids are 9U through high school. Frankly, I'd be willing to bet that there are more coaches that are in it for the right reasons, that aren't displaced or disgruntled former high school coaches. We can fall behind the 8 ball with other states and let states like Indiana push the limits of their players and we will see the gap widen. As for mine, if they are able and want to play, I'll give them every opportunity to get better via AAU basketball.

I have been in and around the AAU circuit for many years. I have seen good and bad coaches, but the one item that remains constant is the level of talent. Players that play AAU have more opportunity than players who do not.

Ky Gymrats intended to go to Memphis but had to pull out due to lack of numbers. We have a solid five, but could not get anyone else to commit. :idunno: The entire AAU season those five kids were the only ones entirely committed while the others that played with us were sporadic at best. Next year our goals are to be better prepared, find players that want to play, and are committed from beginning to end. Good luck to the Ky Elite and N Ky Tarheels. Wish we were there to support the Ky teams. See you in Orlando.
