June 23, 200917 yr Votto is in Toronto and will meet with reporters today at 4. Still waiting on the official press release that he's back on the roster...
June 23, 200917 yr He's a better option than anyone else in the system at 3B right now...That's all i'm sayingWhat makes him a better option than Hairston and Rosales, especially because has no experience at third base? Even if he is the best option (a big if), what kind of indictment is that on the Reds?
June 23, 200917 yr What makes him a better option than Hairston and Rosales, especially because has no experience at third base? Have you seen Rosales play? He's simply not a big league player. Hairston will be the SS for the next month or so with Gonzalez being hurt
June 23, 200917 yr Have you seen Rosales play? He's simply not a big league player. Hairston will be the SS for the next month or so with Gonzalez being hurtWhat makes Hernandez better, especially since he has no experience at third? It seems to me this would be the time to go with Janish at SS and Hairston at 3B ... at least the Reds would put two legitimate defenders on the field at those positions.
June 23, 200917 yr What make Hernandez better, especially since he has no experience at third? He had no experience at 1st and that turned out pretty well...
June 23, 200917 yr What make Hernandez better, especially since he has no experience at third? First and third are similar positions. He's played first for about a month now. The Reds offense is struggling to score runs on a consistant basis right now. Ramon is a better option for the lineup than Rosales. Stick him there for a series and see what he can do. Ramon is a career .262 hitter over 11 seasons. Rosales is a career .203 hitter
June 23, 200917 yr He had no experience at 1st and that turned out pretty well...First base is the easiest position ... third base is a different animal altogether.
June 23, 200917 yr First base is the easiest position ... third base is a different animal altogether. What makes them so different in your mind?
June 23, 200917 yr What makes them so different in your mind? Have you seen Derrek Lee, Prince Fielder, or Adrian Gonzalez throw a baseball? Do you think they could play third with their arms? It's much easier to convert a third baseman to first than the other way around
June 23, 200917 yr Have you seen Derrek Lee, Prince Fielder, or Adrian Gonzalez throw a baseball? Do you think they could play third with their arms? It's much easier to convert a third baseman to first than the other way around Ramon was a catcher....I wouldn't worry about his arm as much as his ability to catch a ground ball on a regular basis
June 23, 200917 yr Seems to me you get the same rocket shots to 1st with a lefty as you do 3rd with a righty up. IMO 1st would be tougher with the stretch and judging the hops, and Ramon looked like a 10 year vet doing that. Throwing across the infield isn't a big deal either. Afterall he is a catcher which means he's pretty well trained on throwing across the infield, only this time it's east to west and not north to south. dmderringer10 is right IMO.
June 23, 200917 yr Author It's official. Votto is off the DL. Castillo goes to the DL with a torn labrum.
June 23, 200917 yr The 3 positions that you can try and hide a defensive liability are 1st, 3rd and left field. I would think 1st would be the easiest to do this. You may get the same shots as 3rd, but you have more time to just knock them down, than having to field them cleanly at 3rd. Hernandez has done a commendable job at 1st, however I'm not sure that translates to success at 3rd.
June 23, 200917 yr Votto's back. Couldn't of came at a better time. As for the 3rd base debate. I'd say Hairsto is the best option. As for the Hernandez bashing. Who wouldn't want a catcher with a career .260's BA? Especially when he hit they well in the American League. I think Hernandez is having a good year. His BA has dropped since Votto went down. But so has the rest of the team. That's what happens when you have no protection in your lineup.
June 23, 200917 yr First base is the easiest position ... third base is a different animal altogether. Easy there big fella. Can I take you out to a diamond and put you a first for a while, just to show you how easy it is? What makes them so different in your mind? Seems to me you get the same rocket shots to 1st with a lefty as you do 3rd with a righty up. The only thing similar between third and first is that they are both 90' away from the plate. The two spots are completely different animals. A third baseman has to have quick hands, a first baseman does not. A third baseman has to cleanly field the ball and make a good throw, sometimes on the run, to get the runner out. A first baseman simply has to block the ball, and touch the bag (or flip to the pitcher which isn't always the easiest). A first baseman has to deal with all types of bad throws, whether high or wide (which can lead him right into a running coming full steam) or in the dirt. Some guys throws have movement, some don't. A first baseman is essentially a catcher without the equipment. A first baseman has to work the angles on throws to second and bunts. You're kidding yourself if you think you can interchange every 3rd and 1st basemen out there. And to say Hernandez could easily make the throw from 3rd to 1st, yeah, he probably could if he caught the ball standing still and threw over, but at third, he's got to make throws on the run accurately, which is something not all players can do.
